The NE RSC continues to collaboratively recognize, support, and help with National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy goals and implementation efforts.

Wildfire Disaster Funding Act of 2015 Would End Transfers of Cash from Land Management Programs
|
National Association of State Foresters Thursday, January 8, 2015 Washington--United States Representatives Mike Simpson (R-ID) and Kurt Schrader (D-OR) today introduced the Wildfire Disaster Funding Act of 2015 (H.R. 167). The bill would change how the federal government budgets for wildland fire suppression to eliminate the need to transfer funds from critical forest conservation and management programs.

Announcing the Fire Adapted Communities 2015 Field Guide

I'm very happy to announce that we have just published our first in-depth look at the Fire Adapted Communities (FAC) Learning Network. The FAC Learning Network Field Guide summarizes recent activities and accomplishments for the Network's 17 hub organizations. The Guide provides a snapshot of current Network membership and includes contact information and key partner lists for each hub.

Watershed Resilience and Fire Adapted Communities: Quick Guides Now Available
|
We are pleased to release our first set of Fire Adapted Communities (FAC) Learning Network quick guides! This four-part series, which focuses on Increasing Watershed Resilience to Promote Fire Adapted Communities, provides community leaders with new ideas and inspiration for developing watershed-wide forest resiliency and restoration programs. The quick guides are based on examples and insights from four communities in the West: Ashland, OR; Santa Fe, NM; the Upper South Platte in Colorado; and Flagstaff, AZ. The guides provide details on strategies and projects that have worked in those places, and they also emphasize the need for site-specific innovation in programs that are just getting off the ground.
Through our quick guides, we aim to provide the FAC community with user-friendly technical guidance that is rooted in the experiences and successes of Network members. Quick guides will highlight best practices, lessons learned, and practitioner tips and recommendations, and provide other useful tools around issues of interest and concern. Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Plans Prescribed Burns on 4,000 Acres to Prevent Wildfires

A series of prescribed burns will take place at the joint base this winter to reduce the potential for wildfires.
|
Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst--The joint base is preparing to conduct about 4,000 acres of prescribed burns that officials say are crucial to clearing away brush that could fuel larger, uncontrolled forest fires. The intentional burns will take place this winter in various locations throughout the 42,000-acre base that spans Burlington and Ocean Counties in New Jersey.
"It has proven to be an effective and economical practice in protecting the joint base wildlands and safeguarding the joint base and surrounding communities," according to a press release issued by the base. The burns are intended to help prevent wildfires; reduce the intensity of the fires; and provide a foundation for safer, more effective fire suppression and protection operations, officials said. Prescribed burns can also help rebuild habitats and remove invasive species.
Trained fire personnel set prescribed burns under specified fuel and weather conditions. Smoke from the fires may be visible to residents and employees.

Wildland Fire Leadership Council (WFLC) Establishes the National Strategy Committee

On its quarterly conference call on January 20, 2015, the Wildland Fire Leadership Council (WFLC)* approved a charter and a set of 13 committee members and 4 ex-officio members to establish the National Strategy Committee (NSC). This working team of technical experts will carry out the WFLC's direction to guide implementation of the National Cohesive Strategy and Action Plan as approved by the Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture in April 2014.
NSC responsibilities include:
- Researching and analyzing topics provided by the WFLC and providing appropriate information and recommendations to the WFLC.
- Advising the WFLC on opportunities to provide integrated and coordinated implementation of the Cohesive Strategy.
- Representing their "field" or specialty area when formulating recommendations and information for the WFLC.
- Acting as a conduit back to the representatives' agencies and organizations, and the three Regional Strategy Committees.
* The Wildland Fire Leadership Council (WFLC) is an intergovernmental committee of Federal, state, tribal, county, and municipal government officials convened by the Secretaries of the Interior, Agriculture, and Homeland Security dedicated to consistent implementation of wildland fire policies, goals, and management activities.
