The Forward Day by Day Meditation for THURSDAY, August 2

Matthew 27:55  Many women were also there, looking on from a distance; they had followed Jesus from Galilee and had provided for him.

When a clearly mentally ill man visited my church, many of us were afraid to approach him. A woman named Verglea took his hand and brought him up to the communion rail. Verglea and others like her are the spiritual descendants of the women in today's gospel.

We should never forget that the world that Jesus lived in was very different from our own. Women were treated abhorrently-they could not own property and were often forced into marriages. They had little or no status politically or personally.

Living under such conditions often forces human beings into passive and fearful postures. But the women in Matthew's Gospel aren't defined by either of those characteristics. In fact these women, unlike the religious leaders who reject Jesus, have followed him and supported his ministry. These women hear God's voice in the message that in Christ there is no male or female. They believe, as does Verglea, that all are welcome in the kingdom of God.

MOVING FORWARD: God has blessed the church with many women who preach, preside, and serve. Are there other people you know who may not be appreciated as they should? See them today.

Family Promise is a community program that provides housing and support to homeless families.  All Saints is one of the original churches that helped establish this ministry more than ten years ago. We host families in this ministry four times a year at our parish facilities with assistance from the Redeemer Lutheran Church here in Gastonia. There are many ways to support this ministry. During hosting weeks we need parishioners to volunteer for several activities during on that week. This includes helping to unload and load the families' belongings on the Sunday mornings of the week they are with us (8:30am - 10:15am) , to greet and engage guests (5:00-6:30 pm), to prepare and serve dinner (6:30-8:00 pm), to spend the night (8:00 pm - 7:30 am), to provide homework and enrichment activities for children (5:30-6:30pm). Currently we still need volunteers for greeting the families, providing enrichment activities for the children, provid dinner on Sunday, Friday or Saturday, and to spend the evening on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. For more information, or to volunteer please contact Marc Dudley at 704-718-4044 or [email protected] .

*  Food Pantry:  Please help us restock the shelves!  Through your generosity, we have been able to help many families and individuals.

*  Preaching ROTA (rotation) at All Saints: We are blessed at All Saints to hear three different voices in preaching. Each one of our clergy; Gary, Cris and Martha, have experienced the world and see the world differently and through different lenses.  Because our community is made up of different people from different experiences we need to hear different voices. At All Saints, Deacon Cris preaches on the 3rd  Sunday of each month, Deacon Martha preaches on the 1st  Sunday of alternate months, and Fr. Gary preaches the other Sundays. We hope you find the different voices fulfilling in your spiritual journey.

*  Salvation Army Service Schedule:  Monday, August 6th - Team #6.  (Jerry Wertz & Deloris Stewart)

* Prayer List:  Our prayer list grows rapidly.  We ask all parishioners to keep the office informed so that our prayer list remains current and manageable.

*  Partnership: All Saints has entered into a relationship with the YMCA's Resource Connection Gateway.  This relationship enables us to help those in need more rapidly and efficiently while also addressing long-term needs versus only addressing immediate concerns.  If you would like more information please see Fr. Gary.

ADOPT A PLOT!

At our last Vestry meeting, the vestry approved allowing parishioners to "adopt a plot" in the family garden located next to the church.

  1. Beginning September 2018, vegetable gardens will be available to be "adopted" by members of the congregation.
  2. The adopted gardens are for the member's personal use. The members would be responsible for planting, weeding, maintaining, fertilizing etc. said plot and the walkway between and around the plots.
  3. The food grown in this plot is for the members use. Any overabundance of vegetable that the growers wish can be given to the church for the Salvation Army or stored for the member's personal use.
  4. Cost of the plot is $25.00 annually payable with the first payment due in September 2018. This first payment will cover cost for end of 2018 and all of 2019. After that, $25.00 will be due in January of each year beginning in 2020. Fees will split between the Salvation Army Salad Fund and maintenance (mostly water usage).
  5. Plots can be shared between members. There are 6 plots which are 4 feet x 24 feet and three that are 4 feet x 8 feet.
  6. Plots will be awarded on a first come, first served basis, one plot per family. A drawing of the plots and paid assignments will be posted on the bulletin board in the family life center. Additional plots will be available if not "adopted" by September 30th.
  7. Checks to be made out to All Saints, please specify "garden plot" in memo section of the check.
  8. Questions and checks may be given to Jerry Wertz or Linda Klocker.

The Collect

Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson: Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15

The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, "If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger."

Then the Lord said to Moses, "I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.

Then Moses said to Aaron, "Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, 'Draw near to the Lord, for he has heard your complaining.'" And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. The Lord spoke to Moses and said, "I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, 'At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.'"

In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, "It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat."

Psalm 78:23-29

23 So he commanded the clouds above *
and opened the doors of heaven.

24 He rained down manna upon them to eat *
and gave them grain from heaven.

25 So mortals ate the bread of angels; *
he provided for them food enough.

26 He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens *
and led out the south wind by his might.

27 He rained down flesh upon them like dust *
and winged birds like the sand of the sea.

28 He let it fall in the midst of their camp *
and round about their dwellings.

29 So they ate and were well filled, *
for he gave them what they craved.

The Epistle: Ephesians 4:1-16

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said,

"When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive;
he gave gifts to his people."

(When it says, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people's trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body's growth in building itself up in love.

The Gospel: John 6:24-35

The next day, when the people who remained after the feeding of the five thousand saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do to perform the works of God?" Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." So they said to him, "What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Then Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." They said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."

Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."
Saint Day / Feast of the Week

John Mason Neale
Priest, 1866

John Mason Neale was a priest of many talents. As a hymnodist, he
furnished The Hymnal 1982 with several original hymns and more
than thirty translations of Latin and Greek hymns. As a priest, he
gave active support to the Oxford Movement in its revival of medieval
liturgical forms. As a humanitarian, he founded the Sisterhood of St.
Margaret for the relief of suffering women and girls.

Neale was born in London in 1818, studied at Cambridge, where he
also served as tutor and chaplain, and was ordained to the priesthood
in 1842. He was both a scholar and a creative poet, whose skills in
composing original verse and translating Latin and Greek hymns into
effective English speech patterns were devoted to the Church. With
such familiar words as "Good Christian men, rejoice," "Come, ye
faithful, raise the strain," and "Creator of the stars of night," he has
greatly enriched our hymnody.

Gentleness combined with firmness, good humor, modesty, patience,
and devotion, with "an unbounded charity," describe Neale's
character. Despite poor health, he was a prolific writer and compiler.
Among his works are Medieval Hymns and Sequences, Hymns of the
Eastern Church, Liturgiology and Church History, and a four-volume
commentary on the Psalms. In a busy life, he also found time to
establish the Camden Society, later called the Ecclesiological Society.

Though he never received preferment in England, his great
contributions were recognized both in the United States and in Russia,
where the Metropolitan presented him with a rare copy of the Old
Believers' Liturgy. He died on the Feast of the Transfiguration at the
age of 46, leaving a lasting mark on our worship.

No future hymnal is conceivable without the inclusion of some of
Neale's fine devotional poetry. The Prayer Book, for example, cites
two of his translations by name as being especially appropriate for
Palm Sunday and Good Friday: "All glory, laud, and honor" for the
procession with the palms, and "Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle"
at the climactic point of the Good Friday service.
