Finding Value in Diversity in Our Divided Society

In an era when our county is divided practically on every front (healthcare, public education, religion, immigration, natural disasters, etc.), there has never been a greater need for the role for the nonprofit organizations. We are the sector that binds.  As Texans who believe in and practice philanthropy, we are best positioned to address many of these challenges today head-on. Alphonce J. Brown, Jr., ACFRE will reflect on AFP and you can make a difference in a diverse environment within your sphere of influence.
Alphonce Brown Jr

Alphonce J. Brown, Jr. is the principal consultant for Docere Consulting, Inc., a company he founded in 2003. The company's mission is to teach its clients how to achieve sustainability using new technology and proven fundraising methods through the use of annual fund, capital campaigns, special events and major donor solicitation.  Alphonce has worked with large established nonprofits, as well as small grassroots organizations. He also has consulted with local, state and federal governmental agencies and international NGOs. He was the director of development, National Minority AIDS Council, Washington, DC; vice president, University Advancement of California State University, Dominguez Hills, Carson, CA; president & CEO of the Prairie View A&M University Foundation; assistant dean of External Relations at the College and Graduate School of Business, University of Texas at Austin, and has held senior positions at a number of other nonprofit organizations. He has considerable expertise in the areas of strategic planning, feasibility studies, organizational assessments, board development, volunteer management and fund development.  Brown is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, an Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE), and an AFP Master Trainer. He is a past chair of AFP International.

President's Message

Greetings, Fundraising Friends,

Summer is almost over and we all know that now is the time to plan ahead for the hustle and bustle of fall. Below is a brief listing of AFP Dallas programs over the next few months. Save the dates and join us!
AFP Dallas will offer other opportunities for networking and continuing education this fall (Executive Conversations, Young Professionals programming, Mentoring, New Member Meet-ups and more), so be sure to check our website regularly for up-to-date information.

On a more serious note, I'm sure by now everyone in the fundraising universe and beyond has heard of the passing of our charismatic friend and fundraising legend, Jerold "Jerry" Panas, whose career had a massive impact on the fundraising profession. Some of my favorite gems from Jerry are quotes like, "Only three ingredients are needed to be a successful fundraiser: Hard work, hard work, and hard work," and "Excellence is never an accident."

And, speaking of excellence, I hope you will join us at the next AFP program luncheon on Wednesday, August 22nd. Nationally-renowned speaker and former AFP International Board Chair Alphonce J. Brown, Jr., ACFRE will join us for a powerful and engaging session!

My Best,

Sarah Elliott, President
