Board of Trustees holds monthly meeting
The PCSAO Board of Trustees met Sept. 4 and approved meeting minutes, July’s financial report, the Association’s budget for 2020-2023, and revised and new personnel policies. The board received and discussed updates pertaining to the Dues Committee, SFY20-21 budget investments, tiered treatment foster care related to the Children’s Continuum of Care Reform plan, kinship initiatives, Family First, annual conference, and Ohio START along with legislative and rule updates. The board will meet next on Oct. 2.
ODJFS kicks off program/fiscal training series
At a daylong meeting Sept. 5 in Columbus, PCSA directors, program staff and fiscal staff came together with ODJFS Director Kimberly Hall and her leadership team to launch a new training series, the Integrated Children Services/County Finance Training Program. Agencies have been asking for consistent statewide fiscal training that informs essential child welfare programs, and ODJFS responded with an impressive launch that featured listening sessions, training on change management and discussions about system transformation, plus an impressive calendar of upcoming training. PCSAO appreciates this effort to strengthen collaboration between the state and counties.
HR management systems showcased at meeting
The quarterly meeting of the JFS Human Resources Association Sept. 4 featured presentations from two HR management systems, NEOGOV and Kronos, plus a highly engaging training session on growth mindset and frontline supervision by Matt Selker & Associates. Business included a statewide directory of policies and procedures and nomination of 2020-2021 officers. The final meeting of the year will be Dec. 4.
PCSAO welcomes Sarah Irvin
PCSAO is very excited to announce that Sarah Irvin joined the association this week as the Ohio START AmeriCorps VISTA. Sarah is working on the Ohio START project focusing on community collaboration and peer-to-peer learning communities. Sarah recently graduated from the University of Kent (UK) with a Master of Science in social and applied psychology. She has a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in gender studies from William Paterson University in New Jersey and a Bachelor of Science in film from the University of Central Arkansas. In the fall of 2020, she plans to pursue a PhD at the University of Brighton (UK), where she will research the potential applications of digital media to improve mental health among LGBTQ+ youth. In her free time, she likes to hike, read, and watch re-runs of '90s TV shows.

Rules Committee meets
At the Rules Review Committee meeting Sept. 5, ODJFS staff discussed proposed changes to rules recently or currently in Clearance regarding Title IV-E Adoption Assistance, Bridges, and Adoption Assistance Connections to age 21. The agenda also included review of feedback gathered from the MORRPH sessions recently conducted around the state on Ch. 37 Assessment Rules and discussion of next steps, and plans for future MORRPH sessions on several rules. New website offers resources for building home/school connections
The Center on Education and Training for Employment (CETE) within The College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University announces the launch of the
new Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center website
. This newly designed website offers quick and easy access to essential information and tools offering a comprehensive understanding of how families, schools, and communities can work together to ensure that all children have the opportunity to succeed. The focus is on the center’s mission to inspire and equip schools, community organizations, and families to work together by providing useful information and training on high-impact family engagement practices.

Child Protection in the News
A provisional agreement between Montgomery County Children Services and its employee union fell apart, leading both sides to a meeting with a judge Wednesday and a court-ordered public session currently scheduled Friday. The Professionals Guild of Ohio (PGO) and the county seemed to make progress last week, each announcing "a conceptual framework for a tentative agreement, subject to ratification on both sides."

This year, the Children's Services division of Belmont County's Department of Job and Family Services will be able to offer more assistance to children after the recent release of the state's biennial budget, which doubles funding for children's services statewide. "We got this additional funding," Director Vince Gianangeli said, adding in February he met Gov. Mike DeWine, who expressed interest in doing more for child welfare with the biennial budget.
