CVS Opening Mock Stores To Train People With Disabilities

CVS is ramping up its efforts to hire people with disabilities with a slew of new mock stores designed to help train this traditionally-underemployed demographic.

The pharmacy chain said it will open at least eight mock stores by spring.

Each site features equipment characteristic of a typical CVS location. People with disabilities participate in classroom and hands-on training in both life and job-related skills, learning the tasks required for working in a CVS store or as a pharmacy

Congress May Revisit Autism Tracking Devices

Less than a year after fizzling, federal legislation designed to provide tracking devices and other resources to those with developmental disabilities at risk of wandering is back on the table.
Members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have reintroduced a bill known as Kevin and Avonte's Law.

The proposal, which originated nearly four years ago, would reauthorize and expand an existing federal program aimed at helping people with Alzheimer's disease who tend to bolt to include children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Prenatal Exposure to ADHD Meds Tied to Neonatal Morbidity

Ulrika Nörby, Ph.D., from Lund University in Sweden, and colleagues examined perinatal outcomes for singletons born between 2006 and 2014 in Sweden after maternal use of ADHD medication during pregnancy. Infants exposed to ADHD medication during pregnancy were compared with infants whose mothers never used these drugs and infants whose mothers used ADHD medication before or

Potential New Autism Drug Shows Promise in Mice

NitroSynapsin is intended to restore an electrical signaling imbalance in the brain found in virtually all forms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

"This drug candidate is poised to go into clinical trials, and we think it might be effective against multiple forms of autism," said senior investigator Stuart Lipton, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Hannah and Eugene Step Chair at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), who is also a clinical neurologist caring for patients.

Special Ed Enrollment Surges In Texas

Texas enrolled its largest number of students in special education programs last school year, the same year the state's education department officially got rid of an arbitrary cap it put in place more than a decade ago.
