Rockford First
Rockford First is excited to announce the arrival of  Jamey Batten as our Connections Coordinator. We are so thankful that in God's timing he has come to serve w ith us. Jamey will arrive in Rockford, from Ohio, this week and will begin serving with us on Sunday, September 1.

Jamey joins the team following two decades of effective Christian service in both Higher Education and Intercollegiate Athletics.

"Coach Batten" served most recently at Cincinnati Christian University and Ohio Christian University where he provided leadership in various roles including Athletic Administration, Athletic Recruiting, and Development. Along the way, he has mentored dozens of college students that are currently serving in various ministry and coaching roles.

As an individual that has long valued connecting with others, his commitment to personally invest in people, the community, and build teams has been a staple throughout his life.

As a college basketball coach, he became CCU's all-time career wins leader before going on to to help lead his alma mater, OCU, to back-to-back National Championships in 2013 and 2014.

At OCU, he helped the University become one of the fastest growing private schools in the nation as enrollment grew from 350 to 4,100.

Jamey grew up in Cleveland, Ohio in a family that led the cause of inner city ministry for the North Central Ohio District for over 35 years.

Batten has a BA in Education and a minor in Religion. He is an avid Cleveland Sports fan and enjoys golf and fishing. He dabbles in singing and also enjoys a good joke on occasion.
PoC - Young Adults Ministry

Point of Change (PoC) Church of the Nazarene in Bloomington has begun a new campus aimed at young adults.  Currently the launch team has about 25 members.  If you have students who are attending Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University or Heartland Community College or who are relocating to Bloomington/Normal for any reason, we'd love to have their contact information.  Many young adults, once they leave their church or youth group, fall off the radar.  It is our hope to keep these young adults connected to fellowship, a church family, and the Lord.  Please feel free to pass on Pastor Todd's contact information and the following information to your students and/or parents.  I'd love to talk to any of them to give them more information.  Thank you for helping us spread the word.

NMI - Nazarene Missions International

District NMI President
NMI - God is Calling NWIL is Sending!
Our denomination has defined a Nazarene Missionary is either a sponsored missionary or global missionary. A sponsored missionary will serve up to four years in a localized need in the field, funded by a local community and affirmed by the local church, district and the Church of the Nazarene. A global missionary is one called to a lifetime of service and funded by World Evangelism Fund (WEF). Affirmed by the Church of the Nazarene with prior ministry experience the missionary will serve in a global assignment needed.
As missionary president God has placed a burden on my heart for NWIL to send 3000 individuals onto the mission field. Well I am excited to share with you God is speaking to individuals across our district AND they are being obedient! Over the next few months I will be sharing testimonies of individuals who are hearing God calling to missionary service!

Marissa Smith
My name is Marissa Smith and I am currently a Sophomore at Olivet Nazarene University where I study Social work and minor in Intercultural Studies. Going into my senior year of High School I felt God call me to fully participate in a life of missions, later that year I also felt God calling me to Social Work. Neither one of these calls made sense at the time, I did not picture myself as a missionary and I had no idea what Social Work even looked like. Despite my confusion, I accepted the call and God has been revealing to me the reason He has called me to these two things. I have had the opportunity to grow my knowledge at school and have been able to travel to Guatemala and South Africa where God continues to shape and mold my heart. God has revealed to me a passion to combine ministry with therapy and counseling for children who have experienced early trauma. I am currently doing what I can to better understand what this future ministry will look like. I love to talk about the calling God has placed on my life and how He has been revealing what this calling looks like!

I am excited to be a part of a denomination who encourages and supports individuals feeling a call to missions. Marissa has a God given gift for speaking! If you are interested in Marissa coming to speak at a Bible study, small group gathering or church service please email her directly. I would like to challenge you to be in prayer for individuals across our district hearing God calling into a life of service! -Carole Eatock

Ellyn Book
District SDMI Director
" Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."   Matthew 28:19-20

As you are going,
THINK BIG: Every relationship, every interaction, all inclusive.

And make disciples,
START SMALL: You. Be one. Be a Christ-like disciple. Re-present Jesus.

Baptizing them, immersing them in Jesus,
GO DEEP: Pray. Empty yourself. Sacrifice.

Become a part of missions work and partner with the Church of the Nazarene to make Christlike disciples in the nations. Retirement Celebration
Bob Hasselbring's Retirement Reception

All is invited to celebrate and honor Bob as he retires. Thank you for the many years of dedication and service to NWIL. You have made a difference in many lives.

St. David Family Fun Event
On Saturday, August 17th, the Saint David Church of the Nazarene held its 3rd annual Family Fun Event. The event gets a little bigger and makes a little bigger impact in the community with each succeeding year. This year, our little 3 hour event attracted more than 130 people of all ages - not bad for a community of less than 600, and an increase in attendance of 30%, in spite of Pastor Burt being released from the hospital just two days prior to the event. We were a little behind schedule in getting the word out, but the Lord was gracious, the weather was beautiful, and everyone had a great time.

The reptile exhibit, the blow-ups, face painter and free hot dogs and snow cones brought excitement to all who attended. One of the members brought his golf cart, and provided three continuous hours of tours around the village of Saint David. I don't know who enjoyed it more, him or the kids, but they kept him busy.

Our small church is making an impact. We met people from the town that we have never even seen before. People are coming up to the Pastor and asking what they can do to help our little church out. The pavilion is already returning spiritual dividends. We are holding children's Sunday School and Church there on nice days, we utilized it for our face painter, and for dining on Saturday, and we are planning an outdoor Singspiration next month. We are trusting God that people are going to come to an outdoor event to hear the Gospel, even if they would not consider coming inside the church.
Blessings! Pastor Burt Clarke

Preaching & Music Ambassador Program
Olivet Nazarene University's Preaching and Music Ambassador Program connects students preparing for ministry with the churches they are called to serve.

The Ambassador program has a twofold mission: to provide mentoring and training for students going into the ministry and to offer practical experience in preaching and leading worship in churches across the ONU Region. The program is committed to mentoring and transformation of the lives of the students that are a part of the program, and we believe that a major part of that mentoring and transformation happens when our students are given the opportunity to come to your churches.

In order to provide these opportunities for these students we need your help by partnering with the program and hosting these young men and women in your church to preach or lead worship on a Sunday morning this upcoming school year! There is no financial obligation to the local church as Olivet is taking care of all the travel expenses with the help of individual donors. However, it would be helpful if someone from the church could house the student on Saturday evening and provide a lunch on Sunday after church.

For questions, comments or to communicate this information, contact Anne Whalen, Ambassador Program Director, at 815-939-5291 or Ryan Crawley, Operations Manager, at 815-936-3992 orchurchrelations@olivet.edu
Evangelist
My name is Susie Shellenberger. I'm a full-time evangelist in the Church of the Nazarene, and I'd love to come to your church for a Spiritual Renewal Weekend. Here's what a typical revival weekend usually looks like:

Friday evening service: Everyone
Saturday morning brunch: Ladies and teen girls
Saturday evening service: Everyone
Sunday school hour: Some combined adult classes
Sunday morning worship service: Everyone

This gives me five times to speak. I have a fast-paced style grounded in Scripture sprinkled with humor. I love bringing people into a genuine understanding of holiness, embracing God in His fullness, and drawing into great intimacy with Him.

Would you consider giving me the honor of getting on your ca lendar? I'm out 43 weeks/weekends a year, and I'm currently scheduling for 2020.

News from our Creative Access Friend
My summer this time was very different than past summers, though I still spoke nearly 20 times in the 8 weeks away from CN. Whenever I was not speaking, I was caretaker for my mother, who had been experiencing a whole series of health challenges since May. There were some good times with her in July and first few days of August -- the parade on July 4th, meals together at the house, one Sunday morning together at church. There were also some very difficult times -- 9 or 10 doctor visits for her, a couple hospitalizations, a lot more weakness, and seeing her suffer through some pretty painful times. I'd never seen my Mom cry in my lifetime, I don't think, but she did several times during those treatments. She was recuperating, though, it seemed, on Aug 4th when we went to church together, but on the 6th, she started bleeding internally again and passed out at home, with me just catching her as she fell. Finding that she was bleeding inside again (for the 3rd time), in discussion between her, me, the three brothers (phone conference), and the doctor, the hard decision was made to not put her through more painful treatments but to let her go to the Place she has been longing for these past several months. She died near midnight on the 9th, quietly in her hospital room, with only me in attendance (though others had been with her all day). Almost our entire clan was able to come for the memorial and celebration of her life on the 12th. My brothers and I had more than a week together then going through stuff, getting her affairs settled, the household of stuff sorted out between family members, and more importantly, having time to remember and reconnect as we haven't done in years, maybe ever. So it was a meaningful time, a good time, missing her but knowing she has reached her final destination victoriously. Man, what a lot of stuff got packed into August while continuing my speaking engagements, as well. Whew! Exhausting.

So, I'm now back in my CN city, having arrived Thursday morning, local time, after thirty-three hours or so of traveling. Got word just after I arrived that for the freshmen classes I'll be teaching, we don't start until week 2, so I have an extra week coming up to settle in, clean the house, and so forth. That might be a pretty good thing, after the full summer. I'll still be teaching Listening to all 8 classes of freshmen English majors. Still plan on plenty of book groups and movie nights.  Still corresponding with believers who've graduated and moved all over the country, and still having Sunday fellowship with some believers who've stayed local. Asking the Father for a good harvest this year as I meet new young students and reconnect with previous group members. The work continues, as long as it is Day.

And just to give some inspiration, I still have a couple stories my young believers have told me in their correspondence that you might enjoy:

A young teacher named Mary, whom I've quoted before, got a chance to come back to our city this summer and meet with like-minded others here. She wrote:    "Hey~ I had a great time with the bigger Family. Got a chance to talk and to solve some problems and doubts of mine. I heard so many different stories, encouraging ones, sad ones. We shared our struggles and gave each other encouragements. That was very helpful. I was so happy that I could make it!"

My friend Cindy, about to complete her studies in the Philippines, wrote: " A few years ago when you said we should rely on Him, to submit ourselves to Him, that time I didn't quite understand. Now I think I know better, because many times our own thoughts and feelings are unreliable and problematic. We can never know what is right except by entering into Him. Thank you for this sharing."

Thank you for remembering us to our Father and for all the other ways in which you support us. We really do need each other. Blessings on you, too, as you serve Him where you are.

Church Multiplication Endowment Fund
Give a GIFT that doesn't stop Giving!

Would you give $1.00 a month if it never stopped giving, never wore out, never changed its usefulness or purpose and transformed lives?

How many times do we give a gift to someone only to see it discarded at a later date or discover it was never used as intended? Have you ever wanted to give a gift that would never grow old or wear out, that would always be used for good and made a difference for eternity? NOW you can!

Jesus said "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."

Would you partner with your Northwestern Illinois District's vision to plant churches?  You might wonder how you can make a difference or even be a part. Everyone can. We need some to plant, we need everyone to pray and we need many to invest.

The Church Multiplication Endowment Fund is designed to reach unreached people living on the NWIL District for Christ. Every dollar given will continue to give in perpetuity. An endowment fund uses the interest from the principle to do kingdom work.  Will you help fund this goal?

Currently, our district property funds have been invested in planting 22 new churches these past three years and the district is in need of capital to continue to plant more! We need your help. Presently, there are 36 more potential church plants in various stages of planning which will require additional funding support.

Help us reach our GOAL of planting 300 churches by 2030.  We see 300 churches as 3,000 disciplemakers who disciple 15,000 disciples gathering with 30,000 worshippers.  Every dollar you give will continue to reach people for Christ your whole lifetime and beyond.

Would you consider a GIFT of $1.00 a month?  We are not trying to take money from your local ministry where you give your tithes and offerings. We are asking for many to give a little.  Our initial goal is 5,000 giving at least $1.00 a month. Would you be one of those 5,000 making a commitment to create a movement to plant churches that change lives?  Here are ways to give:

 1. You can give to your local church by marking your check or cash gift "NWIL CM Endowment" and your church treasurer will take it from there.

 2. You can also choose to give online if you want to set up one time or reoccurring payments using debit/credit/Electronic Check on the district website at nwilnaz.org/GIVE/ On District Church Planting or direct  CM Endowment Giving LINK. Or scan this QR code at the bottom of this article.

3. You can send a check or cash to NWIL District, 3520 Broadway St., Pekin, IL 61554 (please indicate CM Endowment on check memo)

We are also looking for those who might like to make greater kingdom investments!

You can give cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, livestock, grain, or other personal property.  Basically, any asset of marketable value can be used to help fund this endowment. There are also charitable gift annuity options that allow you to specify the endowment fund or another ministry of your choice while allowing you to receive income for your lifetime and when you pass, your gift goes to the endowment fund or specified ministry. CLICK HERE to see other ways to model generosity. Gifts can be given in memory or in honor of someone.

Large or small: Why not leave a lasting legacy that lasts more than your lifetime.

For more information or confidential consultation please contact NWIL District Administrator, Jim Book 309-678-2357; NWIL District Treasurer, Ray Barker
