Floodproofing and Rainfall
Public Information Meeting
Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart, Lake County District 7 Board Member Steve Carlson, Gurnee Mayor Krysti Kovarik and the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) invite individuals to get important floodproofing tips and learn about how increased rainfall is impacting Lake County at an upcoming public information meeting.
Lake County has been experiencing more frequent and stronger rainfall events, which not only impacts the residents and business owners of Lake County, but also public and private development projects. SMC will present floodproofing tips businesses and homeowners can use to help safeguard their property, share data on the increased rainfall Lake County is receiving, provide resources and tools for best practices, and answer questions from the audience.

Like to Hike?
Enjoy fall breezes and autumn colors while exploring designated Hike Lake County trails. At each preserve, look for the Hike Lake County logo at the trailhead to get you started on the right route.
How It Works
Complete just seven of the hikes between August 15 and November 30, and you'll earn a commemorative shield for your walking stick or a zipper pull (while supplies last). Use the
Travel Log
to record each hike. Every hiker needs their own. Bicycling or horseback riding do not count toward the program.
Let your canine companion join in the fun and complete the hikes with you. Record their name on your
Travel Log
and your dog will receive a commemorative dog tag (up to three dogs). You can even purchase an optional Hike Lake County dog collar to hang it on.

, bring it to any Hike Lake County Center, or mail it with a self-addressed stamped envelope to Lake County Forest Preserves, 1899 West Winchester Road, Libertyville, IL 60048 by January 31, 2020.

Roundabout Rules
A rotary or roundabout is an intersection where traffic travels around a central island in a circular, counter-clockwise direction. Roundabouts may have more than one lane of traffic. Vehicles entering or exiting a roundabout must yield to all traffic including pedestrians and bicycles. When drivers approach a roundabout, they should slow down and:
• Look for signs and any pavement markings prohibiting certain movements.
• Enter the roundabout by turning right when safe to do so.
• Stay in their lane.
• Use their vehicle’s right turn signal to let other drivers know they are exiting the roundabout. Some tips for safely maneuvering in a rotary or roundabout include:
• A driver should look for street and direction signs when approaching and before entering a roundabout. This will help determine which exit to take. These signs should be posted along the roadside before reaching the roundabout.
• Drivers should not change lanes or take an exit before checking for vehicles that may be continuing through the roundabout. A driver should expect vehicles to be in blind spots where they cannot be seen in rearview or side mirrors.

Veterans Are Invited to Join Next Veterans History Project
Veterans who served in any capacity from WWII to the present, as well as people who worked as civilian defense workers supporting war efforts, are invited and encouraged to register to be interviewed on Nov. 11 as part of the next Veterans History Project.
Those who sign up will be interviewed by volunteers and have their oral histories recorded by official court reporters who will produce written verbatim transcripts. The typed transcripts will be archived at the Library of Congress, making accessible the personal accounts of American veterans so that future generations may hear directly from the soldiers. A copy will also be provided to the veteran.

Milwaukee Avenue Repairs
The Illinois Department of Transportation started pavement repairs along Milwaukee Avenue (Illinois 21/U.S. 45) in Cook and Lake counties, which will require intermittent daytime lane closures. The work is expected to be complete by the end of October.

Rockland Road STP Project
Rockland Road between Milwaukee Ave. (IL Route 21) to St. Mary’s Road is planned for roadway reconstruction beginning this summer. Work will be completed in two phases. The project will not include the section at the bridge over the Des Plaines River.
The segment of Rockland Road between Milwaukee Avenue to the bridge is under the Village’s jurisdiction. The segment between the bridge and St. Mary’s Road is under the jurisdiction of the Libertyville Township Highway Department. The proposed roadway reconstruction work will be completed in separate construction contracts, one for each segment.
For the Village’s segment (Milwaukee Avenue to the bridge), construction is anticipated to begin this summer with underground utility improvements, which will include new storm sewers, water main replacements, sanitary sewer relocations and private utility work. Traffic will be shifted one-way eastbound during this time. Westbound traffic will be detoured via IL Route 176. Construction will shut down for the winter and two-way traffic will be temporarily restored.
It is anticipated that the roadway pavement reconstruction work for both segments will be completed in 2020. In order to complete the pavement reconstruction traffic will be shifted to one-way eastbound. Westbound traffic will be detoured via IL Route 176. Replacement of the bridge carrying Rockland Road over the Des Plaines River will be part of a future project. It is anticipated that the replacement of the bridge will occur no sooner than 2022.

RTA Reduced Fare Pass Applications
New Applicants--
Seniors 65 and over may apply for the RTA Pass at Libertyville Township. Taking the train downtown? This will save you money and it is free. It takes 3 to 4 weeks to receive the pass in the mail. Bring in a 2x2 inch photo and your Illinois driver's license.
The RTA Reduced Fare Permit allows older adults, age 65 and older, and qualified people with disabilities and Medicare recipients to ride all RTA fixed-route services (regularly scheduled CTA, Metra and Pace buses or trains in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will Counties) at a reduced fare.
