What's New:
222nd General Assembly
Over 1,000 Presbyterians met for General Assembly in Portland June 17-26. We elected Co-Moderators Jan Edmiston and Denise Anderson (the first ever co-moderators). We also elected a new Stated Clerk (the highest ecclesiastical and constitutional officer), J. Herbert Nelson, who is the first African-American to hold this office. We commissioned a new group of mission co-workers, adopted the Belhar Confession from South Africa as our 12th confession and created a 2020 Vision Team.

This General Assembly had a "Way Forward Committee". As a result of their work, the committee officially voted to thank Foothills and the presbyteries that concurred with our work for providing the push and the principles to move the church ahead. Foothills thanked them for their faithful work and the committee's affirmation of the foundational principles, which undergirded Foothills' overture work. The Assembly then voted to establish a Way Forward Committee to determine new denominational structures and their functions. We know that God will continue to grant vision and hope to the PCUSA, as we truly engage in reform, renewal, refreshment and modernization.

The assembly of almost 600 commissioners also addressed controversial issues on Israeli-Palestinian relations and fossil fuels divestiture. (See The Presbyterian Outlook GA 222 for more details.) The Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy plans to come to Foothills Presbytery in 2017 and talk more with us about how "we do" social justice in the church.

Four commissioners, two overture advocates and one youth advisory delegate represented Foothills Presbytery. Pictured are the four commissioners: Ruling Elder Ted Morrison (St. Giles), Ruling Elder Leland Close (First Spartanburg), Teaching Elder Debbie Foster(Presbytery), Teaching Elder Mike Hoyt (Fourth Greenville) and our youth advisory delegate Alex Davis (St. Giles).
