In the spotlight
In her July column for Living Lutheran, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton notes that the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 may have the media knocking on our doors, asking us to explain ourselves. What will we say? She reminds us that our understanding of the gospel is what makes us distinctive.

Reflections from Bishop Erwin on This Week's Shootings
I just finished watching the live stream of the special worship service at the ELCA Churchwide offices this morning. It was simple but lovely. Bishop Eaton reminded us again how, even in our pain and grief and anger, nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.
It is good to come together to hear this again. It is good to come together to speak our sorrows aloud. It is good to come together simply to be together--to find solace in company.
The events of the last two years have changed me. They have helped me see clearly some things I only dimly saw before. And principal among these insights is the racism inherent in saying that "if only each individual would keep the law" we would not have this kind of violence.
We do have choices as individuals, but it is a special kind of white privilege to assume that everyone in America lives within the same social framework; that everyone has the same choices and that those choices have the same consequences; that just "being good" is enough to keep us safe. Those who live in a society constructed for their benefit, with their assumptions as common assumptions, have a very hard time seeing that many of our fellow citizens, Christian siblings, friends and neighbors wake up each morning in a different reality in the very same country.

Pepperdine COMMUNITAS Program
This leadership program is a unique opportunity for early- to mid- career pastors to find the support they need in the earlier stages of their ministry. Pastors get together with a cohort of similar experienced folks for continuing education on a variety of topics such as family violence, addiction, issues of diversity and more that impact the work they do in their congregations.
Eligible applicants include early career pastors from the greater Los Angeles area, in roughly the five- to 10-year period of their career as ministers.
Please forward this information to anybody who would be interested in this unique opportunity.

7th Annual
Lutheran Retreats, Camps and Conferences
Summer Banquet
Saturday, July 16, 5:00 p.m.
First Lutheran, Torrance
It's our biggest celebration of the year, featuring our talented Summer Counseling Staff as the evening's entertainment and energy. We think of it as bringing the campfire experience to a church near you. But this Bible Camp standard includes dinner and on stage entertainment!
The entire camp staff will be gathering, reuniting for the first and last time since the beginning of staff training, joined by our largest Staff in Training class. We also expect families and friends of our counselors, pastors, youth workers, former camp staff, and some campers to boot!
We'll be recognizing our donors and bringing you an update on the new farm program, beach camp and everything that's happening at camp. Who knows...there may even be chickens and goats in attendance!
You are invited! A free-will offering will be requested to cover the cost of dinner, and a Silent Auction will send many of our friends home with terrific prizes like Dodger tickets, a weekend at a condo in Mammoth and much, much more!
But your primary take away may be that your local Lutheran Bible Camps are active and full of the Spirit! Come and See!
RSVP via email to
[email protected] or call Lauri at (661) 889-0042 and let her know how many will be attending.

Help St. Matthews Help the Homeless
In partnership with Lutheran Social Services, St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, North Hollywood has started a weekly drop-in program for their homeless neighbors. They provide showers, clothing, toiletries, three meals, a safe space, conversation, referrals, and spiritual restoration to more than 35 people every Wednesday.
In order for the LSS case manager to better assist homeless guests with registering for Medical and other services, St. Matthew's is in need of a recent-edition or new laptop, specifically for the drop-in ministry. If you or your workplace has an extra laptop available, please consider supporting this new, vital ministry in our synod.
