Great Places to Cycle - Durham Region

Durham Region, located just east of Toronto, has a number excellent regional and cross-regional road routes and off-road trail systems, 
meaning there is truly something for all types of cyclists.

The award-winning Durham Cycle Tours Map features 9 looped road routes that touch every corner of the region and range from 25 to 60 km. The map also features the location and contact details of over 70 Ontario By Bike certified bicycle friendly businesses

Several areas in Durham Region have a growing network of fantastic mountain bike trails and are attracting a large number of mountain bike enthusiasts. The Durham Mountain Bike Association has been leading trail development in and around Durham Forest for a number of years and in 2015 opened 13 km of new signed single track called Dagmar North Trails

If road riding is your thing, consider riding portions of, or the entire 475 km signed Greenbelt Route, which traverses nearly 100 km through Durham Region from Uxbridge to south of Ganaraska Forest. Or try the Scugog Country Cruise, a 39 km loop in and out of Port Perry and  one of 8 day trip itineraries featured off the Greenbelt Route.

Plan a Durham summer cycling weekend with two cycling events filling out the weekend of August 13-14. Sign up and test your endurance at  the Ride4UnitedWay Gran Fondo , and the following day join in for the first annual  Durham Waterfront Ride  to cruise the wonderful trails following the Lake Ontario shoreline.

The southern area of the region is easily accessible without a vehicle, with frequent GO trains on the Lakeshore East Line going as far as Oshawa and with GO bus services reaching beyond, offering access to the northern municipalities. Bike are allowed on GO trains on weekends and during off-peak hours, and GO buses are all equipped with two bike racks on the front of each bus.

June 18-19: Ontario By Bike Ride - Niagara South

Last chance to book - limited space is still available - on Ontario By Bike`s two-day, small group tour, June 18 to 19. 

Featuring primarily off- road riding along the Greater Niagara Circle Route, d iscover the quieter side of Niagara and Niagara south, with this spectacular trail ride along the Niagara River Recreational Trail, the F riendship Trail and the Welland Canal Parkway Trail. 

Average daily ride distances  are under 60km on fully paved surfaces with limited on road riding, making this looped ride well-suited for all types of cyclists. Take in the beauty of Niagara Region, its rivers and beaches, as well as a  unique ferry jaunt over the Canal on the Port Robinson Ferry.

The tour includes hotel accommodations, lunches, snacks and more.

Family Fun Trail Rides

Enjoying outdoor activities always makes for a great day out with family. When sticking to off-road trails, biking is a safe and easy activity for all ages. Depending on your riders, make sure there is extra time for stops that may include ice cream, turtle ponds, swimming spots and more!

Bring the family to explore the paved trails from downtown Ottawa following Ottawa' s Rideau Canal or the Ottawa River. Enjoy another great family ride destination, with lake views, beaches and parks, following the Waterfront Trail  between Burlington and Hamilton. 

Cycling experiences in the 1000 Islands offers a spectacular, off-road ride perfect for families with younger riders, while  York Region`s trail systems present family friendly riding with easy access to wetlands, woodlands and beautiful green spaces.

Ontario's Southwest Cycling Itineraries

Ontario`s Southwest is making it easy for you to plan your next cycling trip in Ontario by releasing a series of multi-day road and mountain itineraries in the region. Each feature a downloadable PDF itinerary, online resources as well as RideWithGPS links.

St. Thomas and Four Ports Tour - B eginning and ending in St. Thomas, this  4-day journey takes
in Lake Erie's northern shoreline and passes through communities with rich maritime heritage and vast agricultural lands.

Looping Through Lambton - A 3 or 4 day cycling route, offers g reat cycling along quiet rural roads as well as river and lake-side riding. Enroute riders can stops at beaches, antique shops, interesting museums and National Historic Sites, live theatre, farmer's markets and great local restaurants and cafés. 

Windsor Kingsville Essex TourThis 3-day journey, which begins and ends in Windsor, follows scenic rural roads and trails to the heart of Canada's southernmost wine region. Follow glistening Lake Erie and Detroit River shorelines and enjoy panoramic views of rich agricultural lands.

Mountain Bike the Southwest - Located all within a 100km radius, make a weekend tour or longer to conquer the trails at one of these choice
destinations:  Boler Mountain , Turkey Point , The Pines , Fanshawe Conservation Area  or Wildwood . Included on itineraries are h and-picked dining and accommodation options (including camping) making it easy to grab your bike and a few of your closest trail buddies.

Cycling Infrastructure Investment 
Did Your Favourite Ride Destination Receive Funding?

The Provincial government and Ministry of Transportation along with municipal partners, are investing to improve cycling infrastructure in a number of communities in Ontario. Recently announced is the allocation of $10 million in provincial funding to share costs with 37 municipalities to build new, or improve existing, cycling infrastructure.  

May Long Weekend: Bike Train to Niagara

The first seasonal Bike Train service between Toronto and Niagara starts next weekend and continues this summer with GO Transit. The 2016 service is operating Victoria Day May long weekend, all weekends and holiday's from June 24 through to September 5, Labour Day Monday, plus Canadian Thanksgiving weekend.
