Spring into good health with Telligen!
Telligen is here to help you make healthy changes
so you can get out there and smell the roses.

Scrub-a-dub-dub!
The World Health Organization has declared May 5th Hand Hygiene Day. Hand hygiene is part of infection prevention programs and implemented in all care settings - especially those that support surgery. Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent avoidable patient infection and ultimately reduce unnecessary burdens on our healthcare system. Learn more from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about why, when, and how to wash your hands properly. Click the following link to learn the best way to  Wash Your Hands.

As a quality improvement organization, Telligen is very aware of the importance of hand hygiene. Year-round, we work with hospitals across Colorado, Illinois, and Iowa to reduce healthcare-associated infections. Last year, the Department of Health and Human Services recognized the hard work being done to reduce unnecessary readmission due to hospital infections. Read more here.
May is Mental Health Month
According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), 1 in 4 older adults experiences a mental disorder. These include depression and anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and dementia. NCOA also claims two-thirds of older adults with mental health problems do not receive the treatment they need. Untreated substance abuse and mental health problems among older adults are associated with poor health outcomes, higher healthcare utilization, compromised quality of life, and increased caregiver stress. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) encourages you to talk to your doctor if you think you are experiencing depression or anxiety. Prepare for your appointment by making a list of: symptoms you are experiencing, life changes that have occurred, medication you are taking, and questions you have. Learn more from NIMH from their Depression: What You Need to Know booklet.
Get Outdoors and Get Active!
Spring is a great time to get outside and accomplish your physical activity goals. June 11th is National Get Outdoors Day. The CDC recommends older adults get at least 2 1/2 hours (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (i.e., brisk walking) every week along with weight training or muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week. These exercises should work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms). Click on the following link to learn why Physical Activity is Essential to Healthy Aging.

If you are excited to get outside and exercise, be sure to prepare for erratic spring weather. Tornadoes, thunderstorms, and flooding are some of the most common spring weather hazards.  The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) wants you to be prepared with these simple steps:
1. Know your risks.
2. Take action!
3. Be a force of nature.

We also offer numerous online educational opportunities. Recently, we hosted a webinar with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) that encourages providers to ask patients "What matters TO you?" rather than "What's the matter WITH you?" The What Matters campaign is a simple, yet profound concept that is key to creating deeply personal engagements with patients and their family members, a deeper understanding of what really matters to them, and is the foundation of developing genuine partnerships for co-creating health.
