Forty-four states and the District of Columbia have laws on the books requiring health insurers to cover autism treatments. But new research evaluating the so-called "insurance mandates" suggests these efforts are failing in key ways to help people - especially children - get needed therapy.

An influential U.S. senator is urging his colleagues to work toward plugging a special education funding shortfall of more than $17 billion.
U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is calling for the federal government to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Non-Profit Teaches Students with Dyslexia Through Audiobooks

Students from Village Elementary in Montgomery Township were cheered Monday as they arrived at Learning Ally in Princeton, the national nonprofit originally known as Recording for the Blind.
These kids are among the one in every five students in America who suffers from dyslexia, a reading disability.

Parents Give Up Custody of Son in Order to Get Him Proper Autism Treatment

IRONTON, Ohio - Six days a week, the parents feel invisible to their son. They cannot call or text or send emails because 17-year-old Andrew Butler cannot converse or read or write.
Relief comes on Saturdays. That's when Mark and Susan Butler make the drive from their home in Whitehall to Andrew's aide-staffed apartment in the southernmost part of the state, a five-hour round-trip that has put thousands of miles on the couple's car and immeasurable stress on the family dynamic.
"If proximity is the way to have a relationship with him, that's broken," Mark Butler said. "I've cried more tears than I thought I had."

Congratulations to Laura C., on her new position as a BCBA for PediaStaff's Autism clinic client in West Suburban Chicago, IL..
Laura will be working primarily in home based therapy. The client sees patients ages 2-22 with multiple diagnoses primarily on the autism spectrum. These children have mild to moderate degrees of autism and need therapy focused on sensory integration, social skills and life skills.

Alaska is calling! A school system in Fairbanks, AK seeks several Speech-Language Pathologists with school or pediatric experience for the 2016-2017 school year. The caseload consists of schools in and around Fairbanks with a variety of diagnoses. Therapist will be working in a few schools within a short drive time radius. The therapist will work five days a week approximately seven hours per day and enjoy the benefits of working a school calendar year. We will help you relocate to the area and you will need a car. Help finding housing is available, too. We also have contractors on assignment there who will be happy to talk with you about their experience.

A school system near Maywood, a Chicago suburb to the west, seeks a full time Occupational Therapist to join their team to treat a caseload of children in an elementary setting for the first semester of the new school year. The position is 5 days a week from 8AM - 3PM, enough hours to be eligible for benefits. Join this group of dedicated therapists serving a pediatric population with a range of ages and diagnoses. Hourly rates are based on experience. The position is available from August through December. There may be a need for a spring term as well; we will know in October. New grads will be considered if you have already taken your exam. You'll need to have an IL license to start. Experience in pediatrics preferred.

Pediatric Tx Corner: Why Young Kids Learn Through Movement

One of my children is spinning in a circle, creating a narrative about a princess as she twirls. The other is building a rocket ship out of a discarded box, attaching propellers made of cardboard and jumping in and out of her makeshift launcher. It is a snow day, and I've decided to let them design their own activities as I clean up and prepare a meal.
My toddler becomes the spinning princess, imagining her character's feelings and reactions. What seems like a simple story involves sequencing, character development, and empathy for the brave princess stuck in her tower. The rocket ship my first grader is working on needs a pilot and someone to devise the dimensions and scale of its frame; it also needs a story to go with it. She switches between roles and perspectives, between modes of thinking and tinkering.

Some of the most important people I work with as a physical therapist in the educational setting are the paraprofessionals. The amount of assistance the paraprofessionals give to my students varies from student to student and classroom to classroom. No matter what capacity I work with the paraprofessionals, I feel that it is important to make sure that they feel like they understand what I want them to carry out. Working with paraprofessionals can be one of my favorite parts of the job!
