PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Falls Church Leaguers,

The terms of office for several of our board members and for me ends on June 30. Board members Renee Andrews,  Madalyn Cafruny, Grace Rissetto,  Pam Spofford,  and Sandy Tarpinian are leaving the board; however, their expertise is still available, as all have agreed to continue to help as needed.  Thanks to these departing board members and the continuing board members for their contributions last year.

We welcome new board members Jody Acosta, Johannah Barry, Marty Maher, and Kathleen Thompson.

It was an honor to serve as your president for the past year.  Nothing makes me prouder than to hear compliments about the League's work, which I know is the  result of the tremendous group effort of many people.  Let's keep it up!

In the coming year, our new leadership team will guide us in the work of registering voters and compiling information and voter service guides, convening community forums on pressing issues, and advocating for better public policies.

At our Annual Meeting, I announced that we are forming a committee to review our policies on Zoning, Land Use, Planning, and Business Development.  With the rate of development taking place in Falls Church, we want to be sure that our policies reflect the current reality.  If you are interested in being part of this important work, please contact me right away. The effort promises to be another example of the what the League does best.

Each of you who didn't attend the Annual Meeting will receive a copy of the booklet.  It contains reports from all committees and is a great record of what we accomplished last year.   A   volunteer form is included with the booklet.  Please fill it out and return it to:

LWV Falls Church
PO Box 156
Falls Church, VA 22040

You can also email preferences to Judy Parente at [email protected] or Pam Spofford at [email protected].   Volunteering is a great way to get to know some terrific people and do a good deed at the same time!

Again, thanks to all of you for your support during my year as president.

Best regards.

Ellen

  IN REMEMBERANCE

The Falls Church League of Women Voters mourns the death of two long time members, Beverly Rausch and Moira Eisele.  We remember them fondly and extend our sympathy to their families.

OPPORTUNITY TO ASSIST IMMIGRANTS IN OBTAINING CITIZENSHIP

CASA Virginia is an organization that supports immigrants in their efforts to gain citizenship and serves the immigrant community with help getting registered to vote, citizenship classes, ESL classes, and job training among other things.

Sandy Tarpinian is getting in on the tail end of helping with the citizenship classes that CASA conducts in Falls Church. They try to prepare eligible people for the citizenship test and interview that is part of the process to becoming a citizen. On their last class this session they will conduct "mock" interviews for practice. The teacher would love some "interviewers" to help so that the students get a more realistic idea of what the interview would be like with a complete stranger. The class is on Friday, July 8, from 6 - 8 p.m. and would require volunteers to meet with individual students and ask them 10 questions from a prepared list of 100 questions that they could be asked in the real interview.

Who knows, you might even learn something about civics or U.S. History in the process!! The location is in Falls Church at Winter Hill. If you are interested to help that evening, please contact Sandy Tarpinian by email at [email protected].
