Bins, baskets, boxes, shelves.  These are all commonly-used containers to store our stash, keep our everyday-used items corraled and display our treasures. With so many options, it's easy to find the right size, color, and shaped container for just about anything.  Your home will look neat as a pin when there's a place for everything and everything is in its place. But what if we turned the tables a bit?

Where Does It All Go?

So very often, people are overwhelmed with the amount of stuff they find themselves surrounded by and are ready to purge, purge, purge. This certainly makes it easy to decide what goes where when left with those items that made the cut. Using the same square footage of a room or closet or other area to now store a fraction of what it formerly held makes the area feel more spacious, and gives the space some room to breathe.

But that is not the only approach to organizing.  Another way to beat the battle of the bulge is to assign a specifically-sized space for specific items. For instance, one large under-the-bed container will be used for all off-season clothing. Period. One 4x4 foot bookcase with three shelves will house all the books in the household. Period. And only the number of shoes that fit in the shoe organizer will be kept. Gasp!
Right Size, Right Stuff
This approach may not provide much wiggle room. There would be no opportunity to 'just put these few things over there'. The decisions may be tougher in terms of what stays and what goes, but they may be more thoughtful as a result. Certainly this thought process can be quite efficient when space is at a premium in a small apartment, a reach-in closet or an assigned storage unit. And while this method can be applied to most any category of belongings, it can be especially useful when dealing with memorabilia or anything that holds sentimental value.
If 'rightsizing' your belongings into a certain space is too difficult to imagine, try it with just one category. As I often share with clients, just because you find the space, doesn't mean you need to fill it. You just might find that this a path to living comfortably and happily with less.
