Welcome back and happy Wednesday.  I hope you all enjoyed the snowy weekend and managed to stay warm and well. The weather this season has been anything but predictable. 

Welcomes are due to Lydia Klinger who joins CCTR this week as the  director
of business operations for the CRS. Please make sure to drop by her office and introduce yourselves if you haven't already.

NIH Releases New Agency-Wide Strategic Plan 

 The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently  released its first agency-wide strategic plan in more  than 20 years. 

NIH's 27 institutes and centers prepare their own strategic plans every few years, but the agency generally does not do broader planning. 

This new plan emerges in the wake of a 2015 spending bill in which members of the U.S. Congress asked NIH to come up with a 5-year strategic plan.

Lydia Klinger Joins CCTR as Director of Business Operations for the CRS

Lydia Klinger, CRA, has joined CCTR as the director of business operations for the Clinical Research Services Center (CRS). 

Previously, she was the director of the Ryan White HIV Clinical Services Program at the VCU HIV/AIDS Center.

Lydia earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and sociology from the   University  of Virginia in 2000. She also received designation as a Certified Research Administrator from the Research Administrators Certification Council in 2013. 
VCU Offering Virtual CRA Exam Study Group 

VCU is partnering with Virginia Tech and George Mason University to offer an online study group for the national CRA (Certified Research Administrator) examination.  

If you are interested in taking the CRA exam this May and would like to join the study group, please email your contact info to Margaret Phillips   or call  804-628-6285  by Sunday, Jan. 31.
 
The online course is expected to start sometime between late February and early March.
 Youngmi Kim, Ph.D., assistant professor for  the VCU School of Social Work, recently led a  CCTR  Discovery  Dialogues  presentation
  titled, "Discovering Innovative Anti-Poverty  Policies and Programs."

 In addition to outlining contributing factors  that make up the poverty rate, Kim  also  identified inadvertent negative side effects of some asset-building policies and reviewed some alternative
options nations are practicing.

CCTR Co-Hosts Speed Networking Event

 VCU and Tompkins-McCaw Library  co-hosted a research speed  networking lunch event. 

 This program was just one of the  more than 40 activities that made  up "Ready, Set, Grant!," a four-day  event aimed at helping researchers learn competitive grant writing skills.

Participants were given three minutes at each table to talk about their research and background before an alarm sounded, signaling them to move to the next group.

Upcoming Events

"Discovery Dialogues: When Mommy Gets Depressed - A Discovery Dialogue about Complementary Approaches for Perinatal Depression "  

 CCTR will host its next Discovery Dialogues  seminar on Monday, Jan. 8 from noon - 1  p.m. at the Main Hospital's Learning Center.

 Patricia Kinser, Ph.D., RN, WHNP-BC,  a ssistant professor for the VCU School of  Nursing's  Department of Family and  Community Health Nursing , will present  on, "When Mommy Gets Depressed: A Discovery Dialogue about Complementary Approaches for Perinatal Depression."  Light refreshments will be served.
