It's December and for many that means it's time to go shopping!  Have you begun your holiday shopping yet? Are you one of those got-it-all-together people  who has it all done and wrapped by now?  Do you shop all year long snagging gifts as soon as you see them? Well if you're like most, holiday shopping is something you're starting to think about getting around to doing, but just don't know where to start.

Shopping for the holidays can be stressful on a  good day. Now add in traffic, congested parking      lots, long lines, picked-over merchandise and shopping shoulder-to-shoulder with people who may  not be in a jolly mood. Sometimes hearing someone shout, 'Merry Christmas' doesn't sound so  merry. Still, the pleasure of giving gifts to friends and family and those in need drives us to take part  in this annual ritual.

Shopping needn't be stressful. Taking a little time to prepare for the experience, and tweaking your ideas about the perfect gift may just put you in the holiday spirit after all.
  • Before you even step foot out of the house, or settle in front of your computer for some online shopping, make a list.  Write down all the names of everyone you intend to buy for and the gift idea you have in mind. Don't forget the mail carrier, house cleaner, hair stylist, and anyone else you can think of; whether you buy an actual gift or plan to tip, include them on your list.
  • If you're shopping bricks and mortar style, try to shop on weekdays and in the early part of the day. Map out your route in advance to minimize traveling and maximize shopping.
  • Shop alone.  While it may sound fun to shop-til-you-drop with friends - you just might, and then find that you didn't really get as much done as you hoped. Shopping alone lets you go on your own schedule and spend as much or as little time as you want in a particular store, and you won't be influenced by another's opinion so you can go with your gut on your purchases.
  • Found a great gift?  Buy it for multiple people on your list.  A great gift for one can be a great gift for many.
  • Consider giving an 'experience' gift.  Movie or museum passes, coupons for babysitting or making a homemade meal (soup to nuts!), or a gift certificate for a cooking class are all great ideas. Knowing your recipient's likes and dislikes will make this easy and sure to be appreciated. May I suggest the gift of organizing?  Just be sure this one is wanted, lest you spend your holiday in the dog house.
  • Record all gift purchases and keep the receipts together. A planner with pockets is good for this and will be a handy tool for referencing all year long for other gift-giving occasions, ensuring you're not duplicating gift ideas.
  • Store all purchases, even coupons and gift certificates, in one place together at home. Then crank the carols and start wrapping!

Wherever and whenever you're shopping this holiday season, I wish you and yours a most merry and bright holiday filled with joy, love and peace.
