ACHIEVERS
PROGRAM HISTORY
The Cannon Street YMCA chapter of the Black Achievers Program was started in 2006 by Charlene Bethea and Ardashia Peay under the direction of President/CEO Paul Stoney. They noticed that while children and adults of color in the charleston community were involved and invested, there was a lack of programming for teens and young adults. In noticing this oversight, they found an avenue for teens that would enrich them educationally and socially. Recently, we have begun the transition to the name "Y Achievers" in an effort to make all students feel welcome as well as to help them realize they should not be defined by any single characteristic of themselves, but as a sum of their parts. The program started with a few students in a small room at the Cannon Street YMCA and has grown each year with the help of active parents and dedicated students.

COMMUNITY SERVICE!
What is Community Service?
Community service  is a not-for-pay activity that is performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the public or its institutions. Community service provides physical and mental rewards. Researchers report that when you focus on others' needs over your own, it ignites brain activity that reduces stress and depression. By volunteering, you have the chance to make a difference in your community that will benefit people you care about. The generosity with your time that you give will provide valuable services, and allow for extra resources to be directed towards other projects. If you take a moment to think about why volunteer work looks good on the resume, you'll realize that engaging community service says a lot about you as a citizen. Volunteer work isn't just about how it looks on paper, but more about what you can give and gain from this experience.
