Abstract:
In 2013 the STLE undertook a multi-phase effort to evaluate current trends and future developments impacting our field. The research encompassed the global opinions and experiences of nearly 1000 tribologists and lubrication engineers who participated in the research as advisors, interview and focus group participants and survey respondents. The work was completed and the final report presents results for nine major  areas; the outlook on the field, energy, manufacturing, transportation, atomistic processes, other tribology topics, government regulation, safety and the environment and basic human needs.

Several universal findings emerged from the study. These included the impact of government regulation and continuing efforts to reduce energy consumption and emissions. The presentation will focus on a high level summary of the report's findings and selected highlights from some of the  individual topic areas, including transportation, atomistic processes and government regulation. Also, ExxonMobil's "The Outlook for Energy: A view to 2040" will be referenced to illustrate the key factors driving some of the trends

Bio:
Martin holds BSc and MSc degrees in Aeronautical Engineering and a PhD in Tribology all from Imperial College London. In 1986 he received the Tribology Bronze medal from the I. Mech E. for his work on rough surface contact mechanics. Following spells as a Post Doctoral intern at Shell Research and an engineering position at Taylor Woodrow's Wind Energy
Group he moved to the USA to join Mobil's Central Research Laboratory.

He is currently a program leader at ExxonMobil's Corporate Strategic Research Laboratory based in Clinton, New Jersey, USA. Martin has published papers and book chapters on contact mechanics, EHL, traction, gear and bearing fatigue, micropitting, gear oil development, lubrication of DLC coatings, mixed lubrication and hydrodynamics.

Martin is a co-author of the 3rd edition of ExxonMobil's Lubrication  Fundamentals textbook due to be published in 2016. He also holds patents on new lubricant components, novel lubrication mechanisms and test methods. Martin's industry activities has included serving on the ASME Bearings committee and the AGMA gear rating committee among others. Over the last 26 years he has also been highly active within the Society of  Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). He has served as chairman of the Gears and Gear Lubrication Technical committee and the Editorial and Publications committee.
