ETHEL TALLEY
AGE 105 AND LIVELY AS EVER!
Three days of special birthday parties have begun for Ethel Talley of Tifton, who turned a spry 105 years old on Thursday.
Born Jan. 22, 1910, in Irwin County, Mrs. Talley has lived in Tift County all her life, including residing in the same house in Chula for about 75 years. Since 2009, she has lived at Southern Care Assisted Living in Tifton.
"Everybody is real good to me here," Mrs. Talley said recently at Southern Care.
She also shared her secrets to a long life: "Don't eat a lot of sweets, and read the Bible two times a day." And, she added, "Keep working, walking and talking."
On Thursday, her birthday began with a trip to the beauty shop and then lunch and a birthday cake. Later,
Dr. David Bridges, president of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, greeted her on behalf of ABAC for being the college's oldest alumna; she attended when it was still South Georgia A&M. The day ended with children from Mother's Love Child Care bringing her birthday cards and singing "Happy Birthday."
The celebration continues today with another party at Southern Care Assisted Living and a party Saturday at Tifton's First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Talley was married to the late A.W. "Buster" Talley for 62 years. She said they ran down to Jasper, Fla., to get married when she was 18 and a half -- and then they came back home. For awhile, she was a clerk at the former Cohen's Department Store in Tifton.
When her husband retired, Mrs. Talley said they bought a motor home and visited nearly every state.
One of her favorite memories is "going to Grandma's house; she always had good food cooked. She had an

apple and a fig tree in the yard. I used to watch her crochet."
Among her hobbies are reading the Bible, playing bingo and doing word search puzzles.
"One recent night, I was working late in my office. The lights had been dimmed in the lobby and I heard someone shuffling out there," said Southern Care Administrator Frank Sayles Jr. "I got up to look and it was Mrs. Talley. 'I'm just coming out to get my word puzzle,' she said brightly."
Mrs. Talley was the oldest of three sisters and a brother. She has three children, six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchldren.
Her oldest daughter is Sue Sirmans, her son is Buddy Talley and her youngest daughter is June Branch, all of Tifton.

20th CENTURY LIBRARY CLUB MARKING 110 YEARS
On Feb. 4, 1905, in the sawmill town of Tifton, the Tifton Twentieth Century Library Club held its first meeting. As a result of that initial meeting in the home of Edna Peterson, the membership of the club expanded and grew. The women of the club made the creation of a library its first major project, eventually purchasing a building to house books, and continuing to stock and maintain the library until 1949.
Working under the guidelines of six categories: art, conservation, education, home life, international outreach, and public issues, the club has been a leader in community improvement at a local and worldwide level.
On Feb. 7, 2015, the club will celebrate its 110 years of service at the Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage

built by Tifton's founder, Capt. Henry Tift, husband of the club's longest running president, Bessie Tift. The museum, the first brick church in Tifton, was built with heart-pine wood provided by Tift from his sawmill.
"The historic museum is one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, building in southern Georgia. With rich, stained glass windows, heart-pine walls, floors and buttresses, and with a heart-pine vaulted ceiling built to resemble a ship's hull, the church turned museum is resplendent, stunning in its design," said Club President Brenda Rose.
During the opening reception and throughout the exhibit, the Tifton Twentieth Century Library Club will display more than 100 years of scrapbooks containing photos, newspaper articles and other historical documents relating to the club. Along with the scrapbooks, "Faces Make Places," an exhibit of more than 400 faces of women from all socio-economic backgrounds, many of whom were trailblazers in the Tiftarea and beyond, will be shown. The opening reception begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 in the museum.

NIGHT OF CHORAL MUSIC ON FEB. 3
The First Tuesday Concert Series features "A Night of Choral Music" on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The concert is free and open to the public.
The First Tuesday series, now in its 14th year, features regional professional artists on the first Tuesdays of five months during the year. Dr. Susan Roe, director of music for the School of Liberal Arts, is the First Tuesday program director.
"A Night of Choral Music" will feature The Sine Nomine Singers. Roe said the unusual title for the group means "without name." She said the Singers were created to provide choral singing opportunities and challenging choral works for local singers.
