LOCAL MAN A LEADER IN PEANUTS, COTTON PRODUCTION
Philip Grimes, a farmer from Tifton known for his conservation practices and high crop yields, has been selected as the overall winner of the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year award for 2014.
Grimes was named as the overall winner during the Willie B. Withers Luncheon held during the opening day of the 2014 Sunbelt Ag Expo farm show this week in Moultrie. Grimes was chosen Farmer of the Year over nine other state winners who were finalists for the award.
"it feels so good to represent the state of Georgia with such a prestigious award," Grimes said.
Grimes has farmed for 37 years and operates 2,210 acres with peanuts, cotton, cantaloupes, broccoli, snap beans and corn. The Grimes family's farming business has grown from 200 acres of rented farmland in the mid-1970s. The biggest portion of his land, with 850 acres, is planted in cotton, but he also operates Docia Farms and a state-of-the-art cantaloupe packing shed.
This is the 25th year for the Farmer of the Year award. It recognizes excellence in agricultural production and farm management, along with leadership in farm and community organizations.
The judges were impressed with Grimes' high peanut yields of more than 7,000 pounds per acre. They were also impressed with his three-bale cotton yields produced after growing cantaloupes on the land during the same year.
"All of the state winners are great farmers, but our judges unanimously agreed that Philip earned the honor of being named as the overall winner," said Brian Kirksey of Arkansas, this year's senior judge.
"Philip pays close attention to all of the important details of growing high-yield crops," says Kirksey. "We were also impressed with his diversification, his doublecropping, his food safety practices, how he brands his cantaloupes and his meticulous documentation of his farming practices. He has spent a lot of money to make sure he has enough water for irrigation. We were also impressed with his efforts to attract wildlife and his conservation practices."
As Southeastern Farmer of the Year, Grimes receives a $15,000 cash award plus $2,500 as a state winner from Swisher International. He also receives the use of a Massey Ferguson tractor for a year, a $500 gift certificate from the Southern States cooperative, the choice of either $1000 in PhytoGen cottonseed or $500 to a designated charity from PhytoGen cottonseed and a Columbia jacket from Ivey's Outdoor and Farm Supply.

Volunteers may sign up to help with community projects to help improve our area.

- Downtown and community trash pick up
- Brother Charlie's Thrift Store (Needs 6-8, organizing, sorting, shelving, cleaning, etc.)
- Salvation Army (Needs 30, same as above but also pulling out seasonal items)
- Society of St. Andrews Gleaning site (Needs 100-150, almost complete! Bagging produce to give to those in need)
- Ruth's Cottage (Donating for Ruth's Cottage)
- Fulwood Park Clean up (Needs 30-40)
- Adopt-A-Mile (Each group that has signed up for this is encouraged to be out on this day)
- Blood Drive on Tuesday at Tifton First UMC Fellowship Hall
- Repair/Wheelchair Ramp sites
- Ty Ty Green Space Beautification
- River way Clean up
- County and Community Clean up (down HWY 41, South of 82 in residential areas
- Veteran/Widow Drive: Donation of items such as sock, t-shirts, PJ'S, Gowns, etc.
- Animal Shelter (10 people needed)
On the day of service, everyone is to meet at their respective site at 8:30 a.m. Everyone will gather for prayer about 8:40 a.m. Instructions will be given about the site, then everyone will need to sign-in and work will begin by 9 a.m. At noon, a lunch at Fulwood Park will be provided for all volunteers. There will also be music provided by different churches beginning at 11:30 through the lunch.

Literacy Volunteers' Carnival of Knowledge Trivia Contest Set for Oct. 23
Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County holds its 15th Annual Carnival of Knowledge Trivia Contest at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at Moultrie Technical College's Tifton Conference Center. The Carnival, a fundraiser that pits three-person teams against each other, is a popular, fun-filled evening with entertainment, food, and prizes.
"We encourage the public to come to this free event," said Bonnie Sayles, interim director of Literacy  Volunteers. "The goal is to have 20 teams signed up at $150 a team." She noted that individuals, groups, civic organizations, and businesses can sponsor teams. Even if they don't have members to play, they may sponsor a team.
The carnival atmosphere of the conference center will be emphasized by circus decorations and costumes worn by LV members. Pizza by the slice and cold drinks will be sold, and board members will also prepare a refreshment table with their usual tempting treats as a complimentary treat.
In addition to bragging rights as Tifton's trivia experts, the top three teams receive fabulous prizes, said Liz Carson Keith, secretary of Literacy Volunteers board of directors. The top winning team members each receive a night at the Hilton Garden Inn in Tifton and a dinner for two in the dining room, courtesy of Stafford Corp.

MUSEUM TRICK-OR-TREAT, ZOMBIE RUN OCT. 25
Trick-or-treating, spooky stories and a costume contest highlights Trick-or-Treat in the Village on Oct. 25 at  the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village.
The event, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., includes the children's costume contest at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Each historic building in the Village will have candy for children as they trick-or-treat around the site.
The Museum Crone will share spooky stories; other activities include face painting, a monster spider web for climbing, apple bobbing, a cupcake walk, rope making and witches brew.
There is an admission charge.
 Also on Oct. 25, the museum is holding its third annual A-Maze-ing Zombie Run featuring a Fun Run/Walk in the morning and a Zombie Trail Run that night. Zombies will be along the designated path to spur on the runners.
Each race will take participants through a portion of the Historic Village and Crop Maze, shaped like a blue ribbon. The morning race starts at the Country Store parking lot and ends at the Tift House lawn where awards will be given. The Museum's 1917 steam locomotive will return runners to the Country Store parking lot.
The evening event will start at the Country Store parking lot and end at the Opry Shelter. Participants will be treated to a hayride returning them to the Country Store parking lot for pizza and soda.

Cancer STOMP is a team fundraising campaign where teams are encouraged to get creative to raise funds to fight cancer locally. The Cancer STOMP campaign wraps up with a Walk & Carnival on Nov. 22 where the community comes together to celebrate success, remember loved ones we've lost to cancer and honor the amazing cancer survivors in our lives. The beauty of Cancer STOMP is that no effort or amount raised is too small because when all the efforts are combined, together we make a huge impact.
