SUMMER AR READNG CENTER OPENS TODAY
The
Summer Accelerated Reader (AR) Center, sponsored by the
Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence,
opened at 11 a.m. today
at the Betty Jo Roach Community Center /
United Way of South Central Georgia
at
211 W. Fourth St.
The Center will be open for testing on books between
11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 14.
This year, Omega School is operating a satellite Summer AR Center to make it more convenient for residents there.
Readers, besides getting the intrinsic value of reading,
earn AR points
for the school media center or library of their choice to buy new books. Bonuses of up to $1,000 can be earned by ambitious readers -
students, parents, teachers and friends.
You may take an AR test on any of
more than 150,000 AR books. It is easy to check online (AR BookFinder) to see if your current
or favorite
book has an AR test. The Tifton-Tift County Public Library has many AR books as well
.

NEW SCHOOL BUSES READY & WAITING
IN WORTH COUNTY
While the
school summer break has just begun, the
Worth County School District is already preparing for the
new school year; the district has
purchased 16 new school buses with additional features.
The
new features include:
Insulated walls, ceiling and floor; tinted windows; an internal and external
public address system; storage compartments; multi
infrared cameras capable of recording inside and bus stops outside; an
enhanced braking system;
larger windows for better visibility;
two handrails to assist students getting on and off the bus; and
heated power mirrors to guard against them becoming fogged up.
Current buses have also been
repaired, including fixing any
seat damage, the school district says.
These are
Worth County's first new school buses in
six years.
There are four schools in the district which transports about 2,200 of the district's 3,400 students.
According to the
American School Bus Council, s
chool buses are the safest mode of transportation for getting children back and forth to school.

free concert
is set for
7 p.m. Thursday, June 9,
featuring
Buddy Greene
, co-writer of
"Mary Did You Know,"
a Christmas favorite. The
concert is
open
to the public through a grant from the
Tifton-Tift County Tourism Association.

The Downtown Tifton Farmer's Market opened for the season last Saturday at the old train depot platform downtown.

CABLE TV SHOW VISITS TIFTON RESTAURANT
A
nationally syndicated television show was in
Tifton on Sunday. "BBQ Rules," a show on Discovery's Destination America
channel, visited the recently opened 41 and Main restaurant to film an episode.
Legendary barbecue pitmaster
Myron Mixon, a
three-time world champion, along with son
Michael visited to provide recipes and products. According to the TV's show's web site, "
if there's anyone who can teach you what you need to know about barbecue, it's Myron Mixon, whose position as
the three-time winner of the World Championship Barbecue h
as earned him the nickname
"the winningest man in barbecue."
Destination America is an American digital cable and satellite TV channel owned by
Discovery Communications. The channel features lifestyle, historical and travel programming focusing on U.S. culture.
The
local episode is expected to air
July 10.

'LOOPING' THE LAKE
RUN/WALK FUNDRAISER SATURDAY AT LAKE BLACKSHEAR
The
10th Annual Loop the Lake run and walk,
a top fundraiser for GraceWay Recovery Residence for
Women,
IS Saturday morning, June 11
, and this year includes 5K, 10K, half-marathon, one-mile fun run and stroller roll events
.
Held at the Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club, the route takes runners along the Lake Blackshear shore and through Georgia Veterans State Park.
The fundraiser is primarily supported by Dr. Ed Hellman and his wife at The Spine and Scoliosis Center in Tifton.
The GraceWay substance abuse recovery program for women relies on monetary and in-kind donations.
Participants may register on the day of the event, but it is recommended they register in advance.
The half-marathon and 10K runs begin at 7:30 a.m, the 5K and one-mile events at 8 a.m.
The course closes at 11 a.m., shortly after a cookout is set to start.
Race check-in starts at 6:30 a.m. at the resort, 2459-H U.S. Highway 280 West in Cordele.
