MAY 2014
Think BIG. Start Smart. ACT NOW!

We're still catching our collective breath after our wonderful gathering in Sacramento, and we're now busy making plans for the 5th annual Green Schools National Conference in Virginia Beach, March 4-7, 2015.  Our mantra heading into our 2015 event is

"Think BIG. Start Smart. ACT NOW!"

Future GreenNotes will feature three new sections, each devoted to one of our 2015 actions.

Becoming a green school is not a prescribed journey; it is a series of conscious actions that integrate ecological and sustainable practices in all systems to positively impact the learning environment. We believe that every child has the right to attend a healthy, sustainable school, and with this in mind, the chosen theme of the 2015 Green Schools National Conference is "Think BIG. Start Smart. ACT NOW!"

We will be accepting three different types of proposals:

  • Breakout Sessions - These sessions are 60 minutes in length.
  • Speed Greening Sessions - These are 10 minute-sessions that combine several 'mini' breakout sessions in one. Attendees table-hop and spend 10 minutes with each of four presenters.  It's a great way to get a quick read on a topic and meet other GSNC participants.Each Speed Greening session will have one presentation on a thematic topic from each strand.
  • Poster Sessions - There will be an area in the Exhibit Hall at the 2015 Conference to showcase posters that reflect student work, research, and other special projects.  Presenters will be asked to stay close to their posters to answer questions related to their work during the Exhibit Hall Reception on Thursday evening.

We are seeking proposals that address practices and structures that support the green, healthy sustainable schools inside and out. Your proposal should:

1. Highlight a school or school district that has demonstrated measurable results related to ecological impact, health and well-being, and student achievement;

2. Include at least one school or district representative to talk candidly about the successes and challenges of transforming their school;

3. Articulate clear action steps that can be replicated in other schools, districts, states, or by other public-private partnerships.

4. Articulate how impact is measured or evaluated;

5. Connect to the conference theme:  THINK BIG.  Start Smart.  ACT NOW!

6. Connect to one or more of the conference strands

a. Curriculum that Advance Sustainability Skills and Knowledge for the 21st Century

b. Stewardship and Service Learning

c. Sustainable Facilities Design and Operation

d. Health and Well-Being

e. Strong Leadership and Networks
