VA First-Grader With No Hands Wins National Handwriting Contest
|

Seven-year-old Anaya Ellick, who was born with no hands and does not use prostheses, recently won a national penmanship contest.
Holding the pencil between her wrists, the first-grader at Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Va., formed neat, careful letters, earning her the Nicholas Maxim Special Award for Excellence in Manuscript Penmanship. The award is one of several that the educational company
Zaner-Bloser gives out every year.

Cerebral Palsy Campaign Ad: Empowering Or Exploitive?

WASHINGTON - Disability activists are split over New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan's first statewide ad, which features her son who has a disability.
Hassan, a Democrat who is locked in a contentious U.S. Senate race with Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte, describes how her son's diagnosis with cerebral palsy was one of the main reasons she entered public service.

Could Swaddling Babies for Sleep Raise Risk of SIDS?

Swaddling is a traditional practice of wrapping babies tightly from the neck downward in a sheet or thin cloth. The custom is intended to promote sleep by making infants feel secure and calm. However, an analysis of published research questions whether this practice might be linked to a raised risk for sudden infant death syndrome.

Mouse Model of Autism Offers Insights to Human Patients, Potential Drugs

A new mouse model of a genetically-linked type of autism reveals more about the role of genes in the disorder and the underlying brain changes associated with autism's social and learning problems.
Scientists at Duke Health who developed the new model also discovered that targeting a brain receptor in mice with this type of autism could ease repetitive behaviors and improve learning in some animals.

Clinical Trial Underway for Treatment of Sleep Apnea in Teens w/DS

An FDA-approved clinical trial is underway at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Massachusetts General Hospital for Children to evaluate the use of a hypoglossal nerve stimulator - a technology currently available to adults with severe
obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that stimulates the upper airway to facilitate breathing during sleep - in a select group of adolescent patients with Down syndrome and OSA.
A case report on the first patient in the trial - whose implantation on April 8th, 2015, represented the first time the technology has been used in a pediatric patient in the United States - has been published in the May issue of Pediatrics. The clinical trial will now be expanded to include four additional sites in the U.S.

We are working with a charter school in the city of Chicago who is in need of a full time Special Education Teacher for a caseload of approximately 15-20 students. These kiddos are in kindergarten through 4th grade and the position is at one location. Hours are Monday through Friday from 7:15AM - 3:35PM for the 2016-2017 school year. Compensation is dependent on experience.

Are you interested in a part time position? We are working with a private therapeutic day school who is in need of an occupational therapist to work ESY in the vicinity of Plainfield. The children range anywhere between the ages of 5-21.
The position will also be available for the 2016-2017 SY 6-9 hours/wk but it is possible that by the time school starts, the position will have grown to accommodate additional hours.|
Qualifications: Must hold appropriate Degree in Occupational Therapy; a current state license (or eligible) if applicable.

I love planning activities within our home around the seasons and with spring in full bloom, I knew that this simple garden themed fine motor activity invitation would draw the interest of my three year old (hello, can we say dirt?!).

May is Mental Health Month - an opportunity
to talk about a variety of mental health issues and break down the stigma surrounding mental illness. But one issue commonly gets left out of the mental health conversation: teen and adolescent health.
It's a particularly important topic, given that one in 5 teens has what the Office of Adolescent Health describes as a "diagnosable mental condition." As a chronic health condition, mental illness often onsets in people's teens - sometimes even before age 14. Thus, understanding that mental illness is a very real issue for teens - and learning to recognize the signs - is absolutely critical to improve mental health care in the United States.

The concept of student led IEP meetings is growing momentum. There has been a growing discussion about including students and allowing them to lead the development of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). While it seems sensible enough to include the student in his or her own IEP development, it has not become a routine practice nationwide. In review of the literature, it appears that the benefits do outweigh the barriers impeding this practice.
