Dr. Benjamin Van Tassell Utilizes CCTR Resources, Earns Prestigious Grants
The CCTR has published the first in our new Featured Researcher series where we highlight our remarkable translational scientists.
Former CCTR KL2 Scholar, Dr. Benjamin Van Tassell, describes a "textbook example" of what the right mentor can do for someone. His involvement with the CTSA KL2 mentoring program led him down the path of earning three NIH grants in addition to a grant from the American Heart Association.

The second seminar in the three-part BIC Brown Bag Lunch series took place last Friday.
Tim Aro, information systems manager for the CCTR's Biomedical Informatics Core (BIC), and Michael Tran, IT specialist for BIC, reviewed the benefits of REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture), the basics of building a project, advanced features, and the available data management support services offered by the CCTR.

Students Present Their Work During CaMM Short Talk Event
The CCTR's Education Core held a "Student Short Talks" session on Thursday, April 28 in the Richmond Academy of Medicine's main conference room.
The event, hosted by Teraya Donaldson, Ph.D., assistant director of education programs for CCTR's Education Core, encouraged students to present a 10-minute PowerPoint on their rotation or research projects.

Brendan Dwyer, Ph.D., director of research and distance learning for the VCU Center for Sport Leadership, will lead a presentation titled, "Exploring Gambling Concerns in Fantasy Sports Participation," in the Main Hospital's Learning Center from noon to 1 p.m.

"BIC Brown Bag Lunch: Cohort Discovery and Data Extracts" (session three) - May 12
Bring your lunch to the Main Hospital's Learning Center on Thursday, May 12 and learn everything there is to know about Cohort Discovery (i2b2) and clinical data reporting.
Cohort Discovery is a self-service, Web-based tool used to discover de-identified patient cohorts. It allows researchers to query several sources of patient data, including EMRs, lab results, clinical data warehouse and demographic data. Data extracts and reporting tools will also be reviewed in this final, two-part session.

Each year, the VCU Division of Community Engagement and the CCTR host an annual Community Engagement Institute.
