MWFPA Launches Redesigned Website
|
MWFPA has launched its redesigned website featuring enhanced graphics, improved navigation, on-line registration for events and a mobile friendly format.
"This is part of our continuing effort to enhance our Internet presence and communication of food industry issues and association events" according to MWFPA President Nick George.
The redesign is part of an ongoing effort to serve MWFPA members, the general public and the news media better by improving and updating all aspects of the group's communications.
George said this updated website reflects MWFPA's growth as a leading industry association and advocate and he encouraged all stakeholders to bookmark the page and visit it often.

MN Senate, House Pass Supplemental Budget Proposals, Tax Committee Hears Paid-Leave Mandate
|
Budget bills the MN House and Senate debated last Thursday will now make their way into end-of-session negotiations.
Senators passed their budget-changing bill on a vote of 39-24, while representatives passed their spending plan 72-54.
The main difference is that the Democrat-controlled Senate uses some of the state's $900 million budget surplus to fund programs and wants to add a new gasoline tax to inject money into road and bridges, while Republicans who run the House reject new taxes and want to split the surplus between tax cuts and increased transportation spending.
Of interest to food processors is transportation funding. Senate Transportation Chairman Scott Dibble, D-Minneapolis, said that House and Senate negotiations will gather to discuss funding the state's transportation needs at meetings this week.
Among the highlights of the Senate bill being monitored by MWFPA, in addition to the gas tax, is a proposed $5 million for the Good Food Access Program that would identify food deserts and food insecure people.
The provision would encourage use of financing and grants for supplying "fresh," "cultural appropriate" and "local" foods especially in places where local grocery stores are non-existent. MWFPA will be working with yet-to-be-named conferees to minimize the provision's bias for "fresh" foods in light of research showing canned, frozen, and processed foods providing equal to better nutrition, cost effectiveness, and convenience to consumers and malnourished populations.
The MN Senate Tax Committee heard the proposed tax on employers and employees to fund a new paid-leave mandate that would apply to businesses with 21 or more employees. The bill was laid on the table awaiting additional fiscal analysis, but expectations are the fiscal issues will be resolved and the bill sent to the floor. There have been no House hearings or debate on this issue.

MWFPA Lauds Introduction Of School Snack Program Bill
|
 The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce has officially introduced the Improving Child Nutrition and Education Act of 2016 (HR 5003).
The legislation reauthorizes the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act and to allow schools to serve a greater range of fruits and vegetables, including frozen. MWFPA supports this legislation. Read more here.

MWFPA's Spring Summit and Scramble is set for June 1-2, 2016, at the Kalahari Resort and Trapper's Turn Golf Course in Wisconsin Dells, WI. For more information and on-line reservations, visit our event website:

On Wednesday evening, June 1st, a reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the Double Cut Grill at the Kalahari Resort & Convention Center.
The shotgun style golf tournament will be played at Trapper's Turn June 2nd, starting at 8:00 am followed by lunch, awards and cash prizes. Register early! This event fills up fast!

Faribault Foods Begins Construction On $100 Million Facility
|
Faribault Foods started construction of its new $100 million manufacturing facility in Faribault, MN with a groundbreaking ceremony on April 26, 2016. Over 100 people were in attendance including several state, local, and federal officials who were on hand to recognize the significance of the investment by parent company, La Costeña Group, of Mexico City, Mexico.
The nearly one million square foot facility will be located on 57 acres adjacent to Faribault Foods' current facility, combining three separate Faribault facilities under one roof. Construction will be completed by July 2017, with operations beginning September 2017.
