The chirping birds, bursting flowers and sunnier, warmer days are likely calling to your students to get outside. So, take advantage of their enthusiasm and take your teaching beyond the classroom and into your school neighborhood.  Whether you teach ELA, history, science, math or social studies, there are many opportunities to take academics out of doors.  Here are two simple ideas from CELF to connect your content to the Big Ideas of Place and Diversity:

A CUNY School of Law Social Justice Initiative

Connecting science and public policy, CELF is partnering with Mt. Sinai Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit and CUNY School of Law's Center for Urban Environmental Renewal to provide three powerhouse days of professional development for teachers in grades 5-12, with breakouts by level. 

Connect with industry-leading science research professionals to examine timely environmental health challenges and make authentic place-based learning connections. Come away with citizen science opportunities for your students.
 
Participants are eligible for graduate credits or in-service credits based on district policy. P-credits available for NYC DoE teachers.

CELF's "100 Schools" CAMPAIGN IS NOW IN ECUADOR
University Academy Charter High School students in NJ raised funds to buy a community filter for a Kenyan school.
Following the devastating earthquake in Ecuador, CELF's partner, Vestergaard, has been in Ecuador distributing LifeStraw ® community filters to devastated communities. Donations to our "100 Schools" campaign can be directed to Ecuador Earthquake Relief or to Kenyan schools.
