LOOK!

UP IN THE SKY! IT'S ...

SUPERMOON!

The first of three consecutive supermoons is set to occur on Saturday, July 12, with the moon appearing brighter and bigger than normal.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is closer to Earth in its normal orbit than average. It is most notable when it takes place at the same time as a full moon.

James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centerexplains: "It is called a supermoon because this is a very noticeable alignment that, at first glance, would seem to have an effect. The 'super' in supermoon is really just the appearance of being closer."

There are technically five supermoons by definition in 2014, but only the full moons of July, August and September will be visible. The other two happen during the new moon phase, when it is invisible on Earth.

The moon is  a "supermoon" when it makes its closest approach to Earth, defined as perigee, in its elliptical orbit.

Saturday's full moon, also known as the Buck Moon or Thunder Moon, reaches perigee (meaning "near earth") at 222,611 miles away. This is about 30,000 miles closer than the moon at its farthest distance in 2014.

However, Saturday's supermoon won't be the largest of the year. For that, you will have take a look on August 10, when the moon will be another 863 miles closer than Saturday.

Here's the schedule for the three super moons this year when they're at their fullest:

Full moon of July 12 at 7:25 a.m. EDT

Full moon of August 10 at 2:09 p.m. EDT
Full moon of September 9 at 9:38 p.m. EDT

If interested artists are not already pre-registered online, they can register

at the event from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday.

The winner(s) will receive a guaranteed audition with accommodations to the "American Idol" auditions in Nashville, Tenn., on Aug. 4 to audition in front of show producers for a chance to become the next singing superstar.

The runner-up will go to the road show in Tallahassee.

Last summer, Marcus Holloway of Moultrie won the "Tifton Idol" competition and went on to represent South Georgia on TV's "American Idol" competition. He competed in TV in Hollywood but didn't make the next cut.

BOB KEMERAIT TOUCHES FARMERS AROUND WORLD

PLANT PATHOLOGIST AT HOME IN TIFTON

The University of Georgia Tifton Campus is a home away from home for plant pathologist Bob Kemerait.

"Tifton is the heart of agriculture in Georgia, and for row crops, I couldn't think of a better place to be," said Kemerait, a professor and Extension specialist at the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. His job is to educate farmers on the best ways to manage diseases and nematodes on peanuts, cotton, corn and soybeans -- four high-value crops in Georgia.

Though not raised on a farm, Kemerait became intrigued by the heritage of crops and how they affect the world. Today, he touches the lives of farmers around the globe with his involvement in the Peanut Mycotoxin and Innovation Lab (formerly known as the Peanut Collaborative Research and Support Program). He has worked with indigenous peanut farmers in Guyana, and small-scale farmers in Haiti and the Philippines.

"I enjoy the international work I do, but my heart, primary responsibilities and commitments are right here with Georgia farmers and especially with our county agents," Kemerait said.

After studying biology at Davidson College and chemistry at the University of Florida, Kemerait concluded plant pathology was a way he could marry his education to his passion for agriculture.

"I was working as a chemist in Gainesville, Fla., and my lab had a window in it. Every day I would look out and say, 'I wish I could do something outside and work with plants and agriculture,'" Kemerait said.

After receiving his Ph.D. in plant pathology, Kemerait joined UGA in 2000 and accepted the job he had always wanted. Being from the South, Kemerait found it especially appealing to be able to research row crops in the same region. However, it was the opportunity for day-to-day communication with growers and county agents that inspired Kemerait to join UGA.

Kemerait's research focuses on peanut pathogens, fungal diseases of corn, nematodes affecting cotton, soybeans, corn and Aspergillus flavus, a fungus that produces aflatoxin which is a significant concern in peanut and corn production both in the U.S. and in tropical areas around the world.

"I tremendously enjoy having a job where I can work in the diagnostic lab, work with graduate students, and I can also work out in the field as much as I want to. That's very exciting," Kemerait said.

"Hopefully my work has made it possible for growers to stay in business to one degree or the other and to make better progress and become better at what they do."
