'STEP-OFF' EVENT THURSDAY ON CAMPUS
PUBLIC INVITED TO HELP RESTORE MEMORIAL DAY MEANING
For the third consecutive year, the
Stafford School of Business at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will host a
Carry The Load Step-Off event on the campus beginning at
1 p.m. Thursday, April 28.
The event involves a
continuous two-mile relay through the
campus that culminates with a
send-off for
 the
national Carry The Load Relay participants in a ceremony in front of
Lewis Hall at
5 p.m.
The community is invited to participate.
The goal of
Carry The Load is to restore the
true meaning of
Memorial Day by connecting Americans to the sacrifices of military, law enforcement, firefighters and rescue personnel.
Carry The Load was established in
2011 by
former Navy SEALS Clint Bruce and
Stephen Holley.
The
Step-Off begins at Lewis Hall at
1 p.m. with a route through the campus and concludes at 5 p.m. with a short ceremony. After one loop is made through campus, participants will have the option of walking two different routes -- the front circle of the campus or a specified 2-mile route within the college.
The walk serves as a
prelude to the
national Carry The Load Relay which begins in
West Point, N.Y., on
May 1 and ends in
Dallas, Texas, on
Memorial Day.
ABAC students intern for the National Relay and lead the way on each portion of the route across the country. Individuals may join in the National Relay and the ABAC students at any point along the route and walk for as long as they would like. There is no fee to participate in Carry The Load.
In
2015,
ABAC had
700 participants in the
step-off event on campus.
Seven ABAC students then walked or pedaled a bicycle the
2,000-mile trek from West Point to Dallas for the National Relay.

MOODY AFB HONORS AIRMAN
DROP ZONE NAMED AT TIFTON AIRPORT
Moody Air Force Base honored a
fallen airman Thursday with the
unveiling of
the Lee Fulp Drop Zone at Henry Tift Myers Airport in Tifton.
TSgt. Lee Fulp, 38, of Hahira, died July 11, 2015, in a motorcycle accident.

Family and friends watched Moody's first honorary jump into the drop zone.
Fulp was a member of the 820th Combat Operations Squadron at Moody AFB and was a combat veteran.
"We utilize this drop zone quite a bit in conducting airborne training operations, and so he's constantly going to be a part of us," Joshua Maskovich, commander of the Moody squadron, told WCTV.
"It means a lot to me that they cared that much about him because he was one-of-a-kind to me, but I could tell he was one-of-a-kind to them too. I'm proud," Sheila Fulp, the airman's mother, told the TV station.

CANDIDATES SPEAK AT FORUM MONDAY
Local
candidates for public office gathered Monday night, April 25, for a Concerned Citizens Forum organized by Tift County Commissioner Melissa Hughes.
Candidates for Tift County sheriff, Board of Education and Superior Court clerk of court spoke at The Place on U.S. Highway 41 S.
Those attending were sheriff candidates, incumbent Gene Scarbrough and Steve Woods; BOE chair candidates, incumbent Kim Rutland and Jonathan Jones; BOE District 3 candidate Amy Johnson; and Superior Court clerk candidates Charleston Carter and Gail Taylor Drayton.
The primary election is May 24.

TIFTON CITY HALL RENOVATION GETS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN REHABILITATION
The
recent renovation of
Tifton City Hall at the
Myon Complex has received an
Excellence in Rehabilitation award from the
Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Georgia Trust presented 28 awards recognizing the best of preservation
in
Georgia
during its
39
th
annual Preservation Awards ceremony last Friday in Kennesaw.
Tifton Mayor Julie Smith,Councilman Frank Sayles Jr., City Manager Larry Riner and a representative from Willett Engineering accepted the award.
The city moved out of the Myon Complex during spring 2011 when it was told that city hall offices there were structurally unsound and were unsafe. City offices moved back last year following a renovation totaling more than $2.2 million.
The building was
made level and its
foundation was
shored up. Also, the interior was
restored to its original splendor, including a
skylight. Initially the
Myon Hotel, the structure was originally built by
I.W. Myers in
1906 atop the
ruins of the
Hotel Sadie, which was first at the site and was destroyed by
fire in
1905.
City Hall
first moved into the
Myon
during
summer 1987
following a
two-year public-private renovation
partnership.
The city owns approximately 18,000 square feet of the building; in recent years, its portion had begun sinking and causing the structure to shift. The privately owned part of the building sits on a concrete foundation.
The
Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, during its awards ceremony Friday, also awarded the First National Bank building in Fitzgerald with an Excellence in Rehabilitation award.
"This year's winners represent a tremendous dedication to restoring and revitalizing Georgia's historic buildings and communities," said Mark C. McDonald, president of The Georgia Trust.

nnual Summer Writing Workshop and Young Writers Conference o
n Saturday, May 7, for
aspiring high school writers.
This year's conference will feature

Walter Cronkite and
Dan Rather,
and author of
"A Beginner's Life: The Adventures of Tom Phillips."
It will also include novelist and poet
Jeff Newberry, author of
"A Stairway to the Sea;"
Dr.

The
workshop
is aimed at
high school students
interested in honing their writing skills by working with
