World Fair Trade Day Celebration
Join the Peace & Justice Center to celebrate Fair Trade around with world at Burlington's first outdoor Farmer's Market of 2016! May 7th, 10am-2pm, City Hall Park.

Support and celebrate Fair Trade with kids activities, bike-powered smoothies, Fair Trade chocolate, and a special performance by Jeh Kulu!

What is Fair Trade you ask? Fair Trade is:
  • An alternative trading partnership based on the principles of economic and social justice including transparency and respect.
  • A way for consumers to support better labor rights and environmental advocacy through everyday shopping.
  • Better prices, working conditions, and wages for small producers.
  • Empowering women and other marginalized workers.
Join us in City Hall Park on May 7th to learn (and taste) more!

Sunday, May 1, panel discussion following the 2:00 matinee

Facilitated by Rachel Siegel, panelists Sha'an Mouliert, Mark Hughes, Paul Marcus, and Denise Bailey will discuss their experience and hopes for creating a more inclusive and just Vermont.

Intersectionality: What we can learn from characters in Hairspray?
Wednesday, May 4th, from 7-9pm at Lost Nation Theater.
This two-hour program is about intersectionality and the importance of solidarity. While  Hairspray is certainly about fun and entertainment, this accompanying workshop seeks to use some of the show's characters and their stories as a chance to explore ideas of privilege and oppression. For more information or to let us know you are coming, e-mail program@pjcvt.org or call (802) 863-2345 x6. This is a FREE program.
Penny Poll Results
More than 250 people participated in this year's Penny Poll. Thanks to the Will Miller Chapter of Green Mountain Veterans for Peace for tabling with us and to all who joined in this activity. It was a beautiful day to talk about the national discretionary budget and what people think are meaningful ways that the National Discretionary Budget can reflect our priorities and values as a country.

Victor Diaz
Victor Diaz marches through Burlington in 2015
Victor Diaz was arrested by plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Thursday, April 21 outside the Green Goddess Cafe in Stowe, where he was attending a Mexican cultural event. He has now been transferred from the St. Albans ICE office to a detention facility in New Hampshire.

Community leaders visited Senator Leahy's office on Friday, April 22 to ask that the Senate Judiciary Chair urge ICE to release Victor and end his deportation proceedings. Victor is from Mexico and has worked for years on a Vermont dairy farm. Two years ago, he joined the farmworker organization Migrant Justice and organized to win back $1,800 in stolen wages. He has since led campaigns to raise wages and secure human labor conditions in an industry plagued by abuses and has shared his story with hundreds of supporters, inspiring and organizing Vermont farmworkers to secure human rights and change labor conditions in Vermont's dairy industry. In 2015, he was featured in a  New York Times article highlighting Migrant Justice's Milk with Dignity program.

It is possible that prosecutorial discretion will allow the case to be dropped. Senator Patrick Leahy is in a position to influence the prosecutor. Please call Senator Leahy at (802) 863-2525 or email his office. Ask him to do all he can to stop the prosecution against Victor Diaz.

Let's stand together to stop Victor's deportation!
Democracy Awakens Mass Protests All But Ignored
Despite drawing 1000s of people from across the country to march from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. to demand the removal of big money from politics, the  Democracy Awakens
demonstrations failed to garner any substantial attention from the corporate media. Even as over 900 people were arrested at the capitol dome in an unprecedented display of mass civil disobedience, corporate media provided a scant 29 seconds of broadcast coverage.
