 FAA Deputy Administrator Tells Congress ADS-B Deadline Won't Change
In his opening statement before the U.S. Senate subcommittee on aviation, Federal Aviation Administration Deputy Administrator Michael G. Whitaker, who also serves as the FAA's chief NextGen officer, made it very clear that the Jan. 1, 2020 deadline for ADS-B Out compliance was firm. During the committee hearing that took place June 25 in Washington, D.C., Whitaker told lawmakers, "Let me be very clear. The 2020 deadline is not going to change. We are in a position to achieve this important milestone on time. The cost of equipment has come down considerably. There is sufficient maintenance capacity to allow all equipage to occur -- in fact, waiting to equip might cost more if aircraft owners crowd repair stations to get the work done on the eve of the deadline."  iPad Limitations: What Pilots Need to Know
According to a report in this month's Avionics News, rare is the pilot today who does not fly without a tablet computer, usually an Apple iPad. But these personal electronic devices are not without their problems. As part of their business, most avionics shops have not had to deal with them. But that may soon change as more aircraft owners contemplate the installation of equipment that gives them free weather and traffic information through ADS-B In.  EUROCONTROL: Use of Aerodrome Tower VHF Frequency by Vehicle Drivers Involved in Runway Operations
To enhance situational awareness on aerodromes, drivers of vehicles operating on or in very close proximity to runways sometimes transmit movement control messages (e.g. requests to cross/enter runways) on the assigned VHF ATC Tower/Aerodrome Control air to ground frequency rather than a dedicated ground-ground frequency. This practice is in line with guidance in ICAO Doc 9870, Manual on the Prevention of Runway Incursions, and the European Action Plan for the Plan of Runway Incursions (EAPPRI). However, using the frequency for these purposes may contravene International Telecommunications Union regulations on the use of air to ground radio frequencies. Please note: It is known that at some aerodromes the use of the one runway, one frequency principle has been extended to include the use of one language (i.e. English); this is sometimes referred to as "Triple One": One Runway, One Frequency, One Language. Four Training Classes Available at AEA Headquarters in August
The Aircraft Electronics Association is offering four educational courses during the month of August in the Dan Derby Center for Professional Development at its international headquarters in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
- Avionics Installation and Integration Training: Aug. 18-20
- Pitot-Static and Transponder Certification Training: Aug. 21
- RVSM Maintenance & Advanced Transponder Training: Aug. 22
- NCATT AET Review: Aug. 25-27
 First, the Avionics Installation and Integration Training course is slated for Aug. 18-20. Presented by Don Dominguez of Radioman Avionics, this three-day course is designed for technicians who have completed AEA's Basic Wiring and Avionics Installation Course and/or have a couple years of basic avionics installation practice and are looking for more experience integrating common general aviation installations. Technicians will learn how to plan, install, interface, configure and check out an installation consisting of a Garmin GTN 650 touchscreen nav/comm/GPS, Garmin GTX33ES remote transponder and an Aspen EFD1000 primary flight display.
In addition, the Pitot-Static and Transponder Certification Training course takes place Aug. 21. Attendees will learn the proper methods for conducting pitot-static and transponder certification testing. This full-day course offers hands-on training, including a regulatory review and an explanation of the proper administrative procedures for completing these critical certifications. It also includes a transponder tune-up course. The contents of this course can easily be incorporated into approved training programs for certified repair stations.
The RVSM Maintenance and Advanced Transponder Training course immediately follows on Aug. 22. Attendees will be introduced to the regulations, documentation, test equipment and maintenance practices associated with performing RVSM maintenance and will follow with an in-depth look at Mode S transponders. This course assumes the attendee has good operating knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations 91.411 and 91.413.
Finally, the National Center for Aerospace and Transportation Technologies Aircraft Electronics Technician Review course takes place Aug. 25-27. Presented by Bruce Bessette, who has more than 30 years of avionics and maintenance experience, this three-day course provides a review of all 34 subject areas for the NCATT AET certification exam. At the end of this review, course attendees should be prepared to take the NCATT AET certification test, which will be administered free of charge (a $100 value). Upon successful completion of the AET exam, attendees will be eligible to test for additional ratings, including the NCATT Radio Communications Systems (RCS), Dependent Navigation Systems (DNS) and Autonomous Navigation Systems (ANS) endorsements.

 LIGHTSPEED AVIATION made its Zulu PFX ANR aviation headset available for sale after conducting field tests with more than 50 pilots in dozens of aircraft and helicopters. Orders may be placed with any authorized Lightspeed dealer or directly through the company. The headset was first revealed in 2013 at AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
SYMETRICS INDUSTRIES is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Extant Components Group, which completed the acquisition of the AIM line of standby instruments from L-3 Communications Avionics Systems. The AIM instrument product line will become part of Symetrics Industries in Melbourne, Florida, where all future manufacturing, repair, spares, customer service and related technical support for the products will be provided.
LATITUDE TECHNOLOGIES announced that Airlift AS, one of northern Europe's largest onshore rotorcraft operators, will add Latitude's IONode ION3A FDM recording and reporting devices to the Latitude SkyNote S200 flight-tracking, voice and data transceivers installed in the Airlift fleet of Airbus AS350 aircraft.
ROCKWELL COLLINS signed an exclusive agreement with Kobev International to introduce a new FANS 1/A+ and CPDLC training program that incorporates a Pilot Trainer program to emulate a pilot's real-world communications with air traffic control. In addition, the company said its Pro Line 21 Integrated Display System retrofit solution for Pro Line II-equipped Hawker 800 business jets has been certified by the FAA.
 GARMIN recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of delivering its G1000 Integrated Flight Deck to customers. The first announcement of the G1000 IFD took place in March 2003, when Cessna announced the selection of the G1000 for the Citation Mustang that was in development at the time. Other aircraft manufacturers followed, and the first customer deliveries began in June 2004 by both Cessna and Diamond Aircraft in their single-engine product lines. FLYING COLOURS CORP. received approval from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority to carry out maintenance work on business aircraft registered in Qatar. A full range of regular and line maintenance work will begin at the company's Peterborough, Canada-based facility on business jets originating from the Middle East. HONDA AIRCRAFT said its first production HondaJet achieved its initial flight, marking another milestone toward aircraft certification and entry into service in 2015. JEPPESEN announced that Air Malta recently received authorization to operate in a fully digital capacity using Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro on iPad as its electronic flight bag solution. Jeppesen helped Air Malta achieve the clearance from the Civil Aviation Directorate in Malta to operate as one of the initial paperless carriers in Europe. WINNER AVIATION appointed NEIL GALLAGHER to succeed RICK HALE as president. Hale will continue to serve as chief executive officer and will take on a new role as chairman. Gallagher previously served as vice president of maintenance. ELBIT SYSTEMS received qualification approval to manufacture composite components and assemblies for the F-35 Lightning II program. In addition, the company unveiled its full HD DCoMPASS EO/IR payload system with integrated mission equipment package for airborne platforms. BANYAN AIR SERVICE was voted No. 1 among the top five U.S. fixed base operators in the Southeast in the 2014 Pilots' Choice Awards survey by FltPlan. The company also placed sixth in the top 50 FBOs in the U.S. VECTOR AEROSPACE subsidiary Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services-North America named CRAIG PLUIM regional sales director. EMTEQ was acquired by B/E Aerospace Inc., a manufacturer of aircraft cabin interior products and provider of aerospace fasteners, consumables and logistics services. JETTECH announced the approval for an FAA supplemental type certificate for installing the touchscreen Garmin GTN 650/750 GPS/nav/comm in the Cessna Citation Jet model 525 for aircraft manufactured from 1993-1999 with serial numbers 0001-0359. D.L.S. ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS played host to a site visit from U.S. Rep. BRAD SCHNEIDER (D-Ill.) at its facility in Wheeling, Illinois. Schneider wanted to witness the skilled jobs and businesses that the production of U.S. Navy amphibious warships brings to the region. DLS provides electromagnetic compatibility, environmental, mechanical and climatic testing, along with power quality testing for equipment on the warships.  PRO STAR AVIATION promoted KURT KITNER from avionics installations lead to avionics installations manager.
