From Our Director...
BCYesterday marked the 10th anniversary of Terri Schiavo's cruel death after being starved and dehydrated for 13 days.

Fr. Frank Pavone, a close advisor to the Terri's parents and siblings, spent considerable time with Terri the night before she died. He later described the utter absurdity of the situation:

"Terri had not received a drop of water in nearly two weeks. As I reached out my hand to touch hers, I could also reach it out to touch the vase of flowers that was next to her, and that vase was filled with water," Pavone recalls. "The flowers were nourished; Terri was deprived of nourishment. Court orders saw to it that none of us could give her some of the water that nourished the flowers."

While Terri's case was widely covered, it is not unique. Cases of dehydration are prevalent in our society. It is important for us to be educated about ethical principles guiding these situations. Our own medical ethics brochure tells us:

"There should be a presumption in favor of providing nutrition and
hydration, not only for those in a persistent vegetative state, but also for those who have had a stroke, dementia or other life threatening illness or injury and still are able to digest and process food and water."

GAO Report

Report Shows Taxpayer Funding of Abortion Groups Widespread

U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) released a report last week that he requested from the Government Accountability Office exposing widespread taxpayer funding for abortion advocacy organizations, including Planned Parenthood. Vitter along with Reps. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) and Pete Olson (R-Texas) requested the GAO investigation in February 2013.

According to the report, six abortion advocacy groups received $481 million in federal funding and $1.2 billion in combined federal and state funding over the course of three years (FY2010-2012).

Planned Parenthood Federation of America alone received $1.5 billion through combined state and federal dollars under federal programs, an average of about $500 million each year.

According to its own reporting, Planned Parenthood used 94 percent of its pregnancy services for abortions in 2013. The organization performed 327,653 abortions, along with 1,880 adoption referrals and 18,684 prenatal services.

Vitter has introduced the leading bill in Congress to prohibit federal family planning funds from being awarded to any grantee that performs abortions. Vitter's bill, the Title X Family Planning Act, would prohibit this funding by amending the Public Health Service Act.

Acadiana Youth Rally
Acadiana and PULSE Immersion Rally

Join us to celebrate life with pizza, live music, games, videos and inspiring speakers at the first Acadiana and PULSE Immersion Rally on Wednesday, May 6, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Cajundome Convention Center, 444 Cajundome Blvd., Lafayette. The event is free, but donations are welcome.

PULSE is the Acadiana Pro-Life Student Council. Student leaders from all of the schools that received the Pro-Life 101 presentation have taken a leadership role in consolidating individual pro-life volunteer efforts into one movement to create a greater impact, build bridges among schools and expand the reach of the pro-life movement.

Youth who attend can connect with young adult leaders in the pro-life movement and gain a better understanding of the many different areas they can get involved in. Several young adults will be giving their testimonies on why they are involved in the pro-life movement during the event.

Couple Didn't Follow Doctor's Advice to Terminate Pregnancy
Still Reaping Benefits from the Decision

By Steve Casey, Guest Author, Stonewall, LA

"Advise termination of pregnancy."

These words were written on the medical records only a few hours after my wife had been admitted to the hospital, having had four grand mal seizures within 48 hours. She had never had seizures before. We already had two children, a girl who was normal and a boy who was mildly mentally handicapped. We had only recently begun to think that she was expecting again. And now this!

Robert
Steve Casey's son, Robert, is shown with his wife Lauren at their wedding.

Upon entering the hospital we told the medical personnel that she may be pregnant to ensure that they would take all the needed precautions. The pregnancy was soon confirmed.

The neurologist, who was treating the seizures, called in an obstetrician to handle the pregnancy. It was during this transition that the words "advise termination of pregnancy" came to our attention. Because of the seizures and the large doses of medicine my wife would have to take, there would be a much greater chance of birth defects, we heard.

But the obstetrician never got the opportunity to give the advice because our decision had been made long before the problem faced us personally. This was a child inside her womb and was to be treated with all the respect and care that a human being could possibly receive. Life was a gift from God, and it was not to be disposed of just because it may not be perfect. We would face whatever might come.

As we expressed our views, the doctor listened silently. The nurse standing beside him began to cry. Later, she told us that she had never heard anyone talk like that, with so much respect for an unborn child.

So we began the months of facing the possibility that things might not be just right for the new addition to our family. The seizures were now under control, but things seemed different in this pregnancy. A month before the due date we were informed that something was different - something that occurs in about one in a hundred pregnancies. It was news that put me into a temporary state of shock.

What was it? Simply this - our new addition was double. We were going to have twins!

On Oct. 9, 1980, Robin, 7 pounds, 9 ounces, and Robert, 7 pounds, 8 ounces, were born. That's 15 pounds, 1 ounce of perfectly healthy babies! Even with all the trauma of rearing four children to adulthood in today's society, I am still glad we didn't follow that medical advice. The gift of life is too precious to throw away.

THIRTY-FOUR YEARS LATER: Robin and her husband are now working with a home for abused and neglected children. They have two boys, ages 16 and 9, and last year gave us our newest grandchild by adopting a daughter from the home where they work. She is now 18.

Robert is a financial adviser for a major financial institution. He has a wonderful wife and plans for children.

God has rewarded right choices, even when they were hard choices to make.

Planned Parenthood Facility Construction Moves Forward
Efforts to Educate the Public Continue
Monday, March 23, 2015 was a sad day in New Orleans.

1,755 days after Planned Parenthood purchased its first piece of property on Claiborne Avenue in 2010, the foundation for its new abortion business was poured.

Concrete
Until February, the site had lain dormant since last summer due to a lack of contractors willing to do the work. But one company, Absolute Concrete Solutions of New Orleans, eventually signed on to do the job.

During the day, as the pro-life community gathered outside the fence to pray, workers poured and smoothed the concrete on which a building that has been strategically designed to squeeze every last abortion out of the New Orleans area will stand. As organization officials have stated themselves, Planned Parenthood believes this facility will perform 2,844 abortions every year.  If they succeed according to plan, they will kill enough babies over a 10-year period to fill all the seats in City Park's Tad Gormley Stadium

We remain hopeful that Planned Parenthood will not be able to get a license to perform abortions. We are awaiting the results of an appeal filed by Planned Parenthood after the Department of Health and Hospitals denied it an outpatient abortion facility license. But Planned Parenthood has vowed the facility will open.

"This (concrete) will be the foundation for a building strategically designed to stop the heartbeats of 2,844 babies every year in our city," said Louisiana Right to Life Executive Director Benjamin Clapper. "We are saddened since the concrete is one more step toward more abortions in New Orleans.

"Even though the concrete was poured, our job is not over. We will continue educating our city about who Planned Parenthood really is, a profit-focused abortion business."

A "Stand for the 2,844" Rally has been planned for Monday, May 18, at 6 p.m. next to the Planned Parenthood property, and the public is invited to attend. More details will come soon.

"Please continue to pray and act so that more abortions do not come from Planned Parenthood on Claiborne Avenue. We believe peace is what New Orleans needs, not more abortion," Clapper said.
