Leveraging Technology

A trifecta of cloud computing, mobile technologies, and analytics have had significant impact on the for-hire vehicle industry. The effect has allowed for the development of electronic hailing, efficient deployment of resources, and more consumer choice. The DC Taxicab Commission is intent on leveraging the benefits of technology to make informed decisions about policies, regulations, vehicles and enforcement. It is critically important for the industry to recognize the technological evolution will continue. Thus, future success will be based on preparing for and embracing the changes to better serve the demands of the riding public.




Transport DC Grants Key Presentation 

The DC Taxicab Commission presented fourteen new MV-1 wheelchair accessible taxis to recipients of Transport DC Grants. Nearly $700,000 was awarded to obtain new wheelchair accessible vehicles or to offset rental costs. In addition, free disability sensitivity and vehicle operation training is provided to all drivers. Applications are now being accepted until November 23, 2015. This new round of funding has $1 million in total available for companies to acquire wheelchair accessible vehicles in order to enhance transportation services for District residents and visitors. Driving Training

The  DC Taxicab Commission is offering all drivers the opportunity to take free disability sensitivity and vehicle operation training. The sensitivity portion is available online and can be accessed by registering with a Face ID at DCTC Training. The hands-on vehicle operation training is available through both Yellow Cab Co. of DC and Transco, Inc.



Electronic Hailing: The DC TaxiApp

The DC TaxiApp is available for the public to test. Under the direction of the DC Transportation Group which is comprised of District taxi operators, the app allows a DC taxi to be summoned through a smartphone. The app is still undergoing tinkering before it officially launches but this is an opportunity to be among the first to try it to offer feedback and suggestions for improvement.
