Tifton's Friendly City Park Complex will remain busy for the next several days as Tifton hosts the Georgia Recreation and Park Association's District 3 youth football tournament along with the 51st Annual Thanksgiving Bowl.
A total of 77 football teams representing 23 communities across South Georgia registered to play in the recreation tourney and Thanksgiving Bowl, said Craig Sowell, director of the Tift County Recreation Department.
The games continue on Saturday, Nov. 23, beginning at 9:30 a.m., and begin again at 6 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 25 and 26. Wednesday, Nov. 27, is set as a rain date, if needed.

NOV. 22, 1963: A MOMENT IN TIME

There are not many events in our lives that cause us to recall precisely what we were doing at a specified moment in time. But those of us who were old enough on Nov. 22, 1963, have that  afternoon seared into our memory.
Fifty years ago today, between 1:30 and 2 p.m., I was watching an educational TV program with my third-grade class at Walter Herron Taylor Elementary in Norfolk, Va. We didn't have a television in our classroom so we joined a neighboring class, which had a black-and-white TV atop a large rolling cart.
The class was overfilled, so I, and most of my classmates, stood against the wall at the back of the room to view the program. I don't recall its subject but I remember a news bulletin cutting in and a man behind a desk announcing that reports are coming out of Texas that the president had been shot. This was just before 2 p.m.
Our teacher herded us back to our own classroom. Fighting back tears, she simply said, her

voice breaking with emotion, "Some evil man has shot the president." We were then dismissed from school. It wasn't until I arrived home that I heard the president had died.
I recall the first time I saw John F. Kennedy on television -- Oct. 19, 1960, just weeks before the presidential election. He and wife Jacqueline were riding in an open convertible down Broadway in New York City during a "ticker-tape" parade. I have a vivid memory of the paper confetti tumbling down from the skyscrapers, pirouetting through the air and onto the smiling candidate.
America was more innocent then. Later, with Vietnam and Watergate, we became distrustful of our government. And we learned that all presidents were indeed only human with many flaws and major lapses in judgment.
But what JFK ultimately represented then and still represents today is America's promise, that we are the shining light of the world and can accomplish whatever we put our minds and our shoulders toward. Kennedy's words can stir us even a half-century later.
The closing lines of his inaugural address are simple, yet profound, and are something we should live by: "Let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own."

State Sen. John D. Crosby, R-Tifton, said this week he won't seek re-election next year, and his pronouncement was followed by Bryce Johnson of Tifton announcing his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat.
Johnson is Worth County's solicitor-general and assistant prosecutor in courts in Dodge, Tift and Turner counties.
Crosby was first elected to the General Assembly in 2008. His District 13 consists of Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Lee, Turner, Wilcox, Worth and portions of Sumter and Tift counties. He formerly was a superior court judge.

Johnson, a Worth County native, made his announcement Wednesday outside the Tift County Courthouse.
He said he is best qualified for the seat because he has made a lifetime commitment of participating in government and serving the public.
"We must have a strong voice in Atlanta to be sure the needs and concerns of our district are met," he said, adding he will work to grow jobs and improve education.

LOCAL CHRISTMAS TREE FARM
PROVIDING 'TREES FOR TROOPS'
Brumby & White Christmas Tree Farm in Tift County once again is joining Christmas tree farmers across the country to provide Christmas trees to military families in need through the "Trees for Troops" program.
Brumby & White has committed to providing 150 6-to8-foot trees to military families, designated by Family Services, in 22 counties of South Georgia. Tifton and Cordele National Guard personnel will join volunteers and farm employees on Dec. 5 and 12 to cut, bale, tag and load the trees.
Folks may make a $25 donation in support of a veteran or active-duty service member to:  Trees for Troops, P.O. Box 1554, Tifton, GA 31793. The tag on the tree will bear the name, rank and service branch of the individual or individuals being honored. A list of all honorees will be posted at the Brumby & White Christmas Tree Farm on Chula-Brookfield Road.

Tifton Mall opens at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving day, Nov 28
and will stay open through 10 p.m. Friday night, Nov. 29
Santa arrives at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, and will be giving away free toys to the first few visitors.
Santa will be at the Tifton Mall until Dec. 23.

WALK THIS WAY...
TO PEACE LUTHERAN'S 'COOKIE WALK'
Peace Lutheran Church in Tifton invites the community to its annual "Cookie Walk" from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the church on 604 Tennessee Drive.
For many years, the Peace Lutheran ladies have baked and sold dozens of varieties of  cookies and baked goods to raise money for special projects. They have supported mission trips to Africa, helped put roofs on buildings, bought food for the hungry and purchased phone cards for deployed soldiers.
This year, the money will go to buy more phone cards for soldiers overseas. New this year will be gift items. The ladies have been busy  knitting, sewing and gluing, as well as cooking. There are scarves and Christmas ornaments, wreaths and rugs.
The Peace Lutheran ladies invite you to pick up some cookies ($6 a pound -- mix and match whichever cookies you like), have a cup of coffee and a freshly made doughnuts (yes, they will be frying them right there Saturday morning) and stay for a grilled hotdog and a drink for lunch.

Annual Tree of Life lighting ceremony on Dec. 12
Purchase a light in honor or memory of a loved one, friend or co-worker, all for a good cause.
Area residents will honor family and friends and remember lost loved ones at the Tree ofLife lighting ceremony to be held on the front lawn at Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC) on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m.
 An annual holiday tradition in its 28th year, the Tree of Life is sponsored by the Tifton Junior Woman's Club, raising money for a special fund benefiting patients of the TRMC Oncology Center and Hospice of Tift Area with special needs. With various giving levels, lights for  the tree are purchased in memory or honor of a special family member or friend. The Tree of Life provides much needed aid to cancer, hospice or seriously ill patients who are feeling financial pressures while undergoing treatment or care. The fund helps to pay for utility bills, groceries or special comforts. The decorative tree will be illuminated with a ceremonial pull of the switch by family members of patients who have received services from Hospice of Tift Area and the TRMC Oncology Center. The evening will also feature live holiday music, a poignant candlelight ceremony and a visit from Santa Claus, as well as a free dinner presented by the TRMC Food Services Department. "Real" snow will even cover the ground. "Tree of Life is a reflective event, but we also wanted it to be a celebration," said Joy Davis, event coordinator. "We'll remember those we've loved and lost, honor those still with us and celebrate the joy of life." Donations to the Tree of Life are being accepted until the end of December. THANKING OUR FARMERS
GA. PEANUT COMMISSION HOSTS APPRECIATION DAY
The Georgia Peanut Commission, in cooperation with the National Peanut Buying Points  Association and peanut food manufacturers, is hosting the 2013 Farmer Appreciation Day at the GPC office, 445 Fulwood Boulevard, Tifton, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25.
Georgia's peanut farmers, along with other farmers throughout the state, are invited. To kick off the celebration, a brief program is at 11 a.m. Country-fried and boiled peanuts, grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and other refreshments will be available.
"It's harvest time in Georgia, and what a better time to celebrate and honor the men and women who feed and clothe us than the week of Thanksgiving," said GPC Chairman Armond Morris.
Attendees will get a tour the state-of-the-art Peanut Commission office. Anyone interested in attending is welcome.

CANE-GRINDING SATURDAY
GA. MUSEUM OF AGRICULTURE
The annual cane-grinding and syrup-making party at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic V illage at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College continues Saturday, Nov. 23.
The museum is one of the few places left where one may see sugar cane grinding with a mule leading the way. The sweet juice pouring from the cane mill will then be transferred to the syrup shed where it will be cooked down in a cast iron kettle to make cane syrup.
Costumed interpreters will explain the cane grinding process and the intricacies of producing a bottle of cane syrup. There is an admission fee. For information, call 229-391-5205.

  Dr. Michael Garbee Dr. Richard Beasley Tift Regional welcomes new neurologist, pulmonologist Tift Regional Health System announced that a new neurologist and pulmonary medicine/critical care specialist has joined Affinity Clinic in Tifton.
Neurologist Michael Garbee, M.D., will work alongside fellow neurologist Brad Lindsey, M.D., in providing the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions to include epilepsy; movement disorders; dementias and other cognitive conditions; cerebrovascular diseases; stroke; and, concussions.
Prior to joining Affinity Clinic, Dr. Garbee practiced in Mississippi. After earning his medical degree at the American University of the Caribbean, Dr. Garbee completed residency training programs at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Pulmonary medicine/critical care specialist Richard Beasley, D.O., is available to provide consultative, diagnostic and therapeutic services to include lung cancer diagnosis and treatment; chronic obstructive lung diseases including asthma; interstitial lung diseases; pulmonary vascular disease including pulmonary hypertension; acute and chronic respiratory failure; and various lung infections. He will be working with fellow pulmonary medicine/critical care specialists Rubal Patel, M.D. and Jian Li, M.D. Dr. Beasley earned his medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and followed with a residency at Maine Medical Center and a fellowship at Tufts Medical Center. Prior to serving as a pulmonary medicine/critical care specialist with Affinity Clinic, Dr. Beasley worked as a hospital medicine physician at Tift Regional Medical Center through Affinity Hospital Medicine.

Harry Connick Jr. in Tifton?
That's what some folks say.
Harry Connick Jr., the crooner/actor, was said to have been spotted on Monday afternoon, Nov. 18, shopping at Publix Supermarket off
Virginia Avenue. Apparently he was traveling in a large motor coach and had made a short stop off I-75.
No word about what the "American Idol" judge and "Law & Order: SVU" star was purchasing.
Of course, this isn't the first time celebrities have been spotted traveling through Tifton. A few years ago, a Tift County sheriff's deputy is said to have stopped former Beatle Paul McCartney, who was speeding up Interstate 75 in the county. He was carrying a British driver's license, which would have resulted in a lot of extra paperwork if he had been ticketed. McCartney instead received a stern warning to obey the speed limit.
To paraphrase a Beatles' tune, "Baby, you can drive your car" -- just don't go too fast!
