A GEORGIA SHERIFF GETS TO
THE HEART OF THE MATTER

Today -- Friday, Feb. 14 -- is, of course, St. Valentine's Day.

But not in North Georgia

By pronouncement of Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berrythere will be no Valentine's Day on Friday ... that is, if you live north of Interstate 16 and have to drive to get a gift!

The (semi) tongue-in-cheek announcement was posted on the Oconee County Sheriff's Office Facebook page as the upper part of the state struggles with snow and icy roads.

The Facebook post reads:

"The Oconee County County Sheriff's Office announces that Valentines Day has been CANCELLED from a line North of I-16 to the Georgia/Tennessee border.

"Men who live in the designated 'NO VALENTINES DAY ZONE' are exempt from having to run out and buy lottery scratchers and Hershey bars from the corner stores until February 18, 2014, due to ice, snow, freezing rain."

A sheriff's office dispatcher told CNN that the sheriff "was just trying to cut the monotony." Dispatcher John Ogle said deputies have been practically snowed in at the office for a marathon 34-hour shift.

"And I think he was just trying to give our spouses a little laugh," Ogle said.

The Facebook post has gotten more than 1,000 "likes" and scores of comments. One man wrote: "Can you make sure my wife gets a copy of this memo?"

THIS WEEK IN TIFTON

Reading Rally & Tiftarea Realtor Awards

In this week's video, the Tifton Grapevine looks at two events in the community during the past week: The Reading Capital's "Rally for Reading" and the Tiftarea Board of Realtors annual awards program.

The Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence generated $3,600 last Sunday, Feb. 9, during a tennis exhibition to kick off the Reading Capital's 5 million Accelerated Reader points celebration. The event paired local contributors with ABAC tennis players -- and tennis players from the local school system.

Then, on Monday, Feb. 10, the Tiftarea Board of Realtors held its annual awards luncheon to recognize its top Realtors of the past year. Ronnie Dunn formally took over from Jessica Powell as as this year's president of the group.

TIFT COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
HAS 'WOMEN'S BUILD DAY' FEB. 22

Tift County Habitat for Humanity is having a "Women's Build Day" project on Saturday, Feb. 22. Volunteers will be adding a porch to a house that the group is building.

No experience is necessary. Instruction will be offered on site; women with all skill levels are invited to help.

The build will last from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. and will be broken into shifts, depending on the number of volunteers. Tentative shifts are 8 a.m.-Noon and 1- 5 p.m. The organization is seeking five people per shift and no experience is needed.

The house was started several years ago but not completed. The local Habitat group plans to finish it but first must build the porch/deck. That will complete the outside and then the inside will be addressed.

Habitat for Humanity is planning a work day each Saturday until the house is finished.

Interested volunteers may contact Judy Shiflet at 229-392-7604 or [email protected]

WEATHER POSTPONES ALZHEIMER'S DAY
AT GEORGIA CAPITOL

This week's winter storm forced the Alzheimer's Association, Georgia Chapter, to reschedule its annual Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the Capitol to Thursday, Feb. 27.

Anyone who has not registered may still do so at www.alz.org/georgia or call 1-800-272-3900, which rings in the Tifton office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. -5 p.m.

"We have 17 advocates signed up for this year, and we can take a lot more," said Bonnie Sayles,

Bonnie Sayles

regional programs director. "Our region represents the largest geographical area of the state with 35 counties. Some of our local advocates cannot go at the new date, so please consider stepping up to be a Voice at our state Capitol on Feb. 27."

The purpose of Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the Georgia State Capitol is:

  • To speak with our state senators and state representatives about the needs of those living with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia and their families, and
  • To raise awareness about Alzheimer's and related dementias at the Capitol among all legislators and state agencies.

This year, the specific plans of the group include:

  • Advocating to strengthen Georgia's Respite Care for those with Alzheimer's disease or dementia;
  • Creating a Georgia Alzheimer's Registry;
  • Funding emergency placement for those with Alzheimer's disease or dementia when a care facility is closed or when a person, who has Alzheimer's disease or dementia, wanders.

For more information, email [email protected], visit www.alz.org/georgia, or call 1-800-272-3900

More than 300 statewide advocates for those with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders are expected to convene at the Capitol for Alzheimer's Awareness Day. Advocacy training will be offered during a webinar on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Awareness Day participants will receive a VOICE T-shirt to wear, and lunch will be provided. There is no charge, but registration is required by the new deadline of 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21, in order to plan travel, meals and materials.

"This is your opportunity to tell your story of your family's journey with Alzheimer's or a related dementia to your state senator and state representative, and to ask them to support key legislation," said Sayles.

Anyone with questions about Alzheimer's disease or seeking information should contact the Alzheimer's Association's 24/7 toll-free Helpline at 1-800-272-3900 or visit alz.org.
