National Market Summary:

Jefferson City, MO Fri April 4, 2014 USDA-MO Dept of Ag Market News 

Compared to last week, calves under 500 lbs sold uneven from 5.00 lower to 10.00 higher; those trending higher were grazing cattle with good condition or reputation. Feeder steer and heifer calves over 500 lbs sold mostly 3.00 to 8.00 higher. Several around 650 lb had instances of 10.00 to 12.00 higher. Yearlings over 800 lbs sold mostly steady. Prices on many classes and types of cattle, from feather-weight feeders all the way to slaughter cows and bulls, continue to push at record levels. Feeder steers Medium and Large 1 600-650 lbs had an average price of 208.33 this week and a pot load of 72 head of reputation steers averaging 708 lbs in Green City sold at 201.00. It is no longer uncommon for high dressing slaughter bulls to reach mid 130.00’s and several high dressing slaughter cows are now at or slightly over the 120.00 mark. Feeder supply is moderate; demand is good to very good. Some farmers were beginning to put corn in the ground before this week’s severe weather affected parts of the state. Planting was not yet taking place at a high enough rate to affect local cattle auctions. Several areas of the state received six or more inches of rain and field work will now be further delayed. Feedlot sales had yet to develop for the week as of 8:00 am Friday.
