 2015-16 Pilot's Guide to Avionics Debuts at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh
The Aircraft Electronics Association's 13th edition of the Pilot's Guide to Avionics will be available for the first time at the Experimental Aircraft Association's AirVenture, July 20-26, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The free publication will be available to attendees at the AEA's AirVenture booth, No. 2036/36 in Hangar B at Wittman Regional Airport. In addition to a complete directory of AEA-member government-certified repair stations, avionics manufacturers and distributors, the Pilot's Guide to Avionics features educational articles to help pilots and aircraft owners with their avionics buying decisions. The publication also will be distributed throughout the year at AEA Regional Meetings; the NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition; HAI's Heli-Expo; and the AEA International Convention & Trade Show.  Five Aircraft Owners to Receive $1,000 Toward an ADS-B Upgrade at AirVenture Oshkosh
To help incentivize owners of general aviation aircraft to meet the Federal Aviation Administration's ADS-B Out mandate, the AEA will randomly award five aircraft owners with $1,000 toward an ADS-B compliant upgrade during EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Each of the five winners must use an AEA-member avionics shop to complete the installation, and the installation must be scheduled by Aug. 1, 2016.
Aircraft owners may enter to win one of the five $1,000 giveaways at the AEA's booth (No. 2035/36 in Hangar B). One entry gives aircraft owners a chance to win each of the five daily drawings. The AEA will announce one winner each day beginning July 21 through its social media outlets.
"Aircraft owners who wait to equip will face scheduling pressure and higher installation costs as we get closer to the deadline," said AEA President Paula Derks. "By awarding $1,000 to five different aircraft owners to help them become compliant sooner rather than later, the AEA hopes to send a message to owners of general aviation aircraft that the time to act and upgrade is now." FAA Proposes Changes to the Application Requirements for Authorization to Operate in RVSM Airspace
In this proposal, the Federal Aviation Administration would revise its requirements for an application to operate in reduced vertical separation minimum airspace. The proposal would eliminate the burden and expense of developing, processing and approving RVSM maintenance programs. As a result of this proposed revision, an applicant to operate in RVSM airspace would no longer be required to develop and submit an RVSM maintenance program solely for the purpose of an RVSM authorization. Because of other, independent FAA airworthiness regulations, all aircraft operators would continue to be required to maintain RVSM equipment in an airworthy condition.
Comments are due on or before July 27, 2015.

 Masters of the Caravan: ASIC Specializes in the Iconic Turboprop
In the hangar, technicians lower a banged up Cessna Caravan fuselage into a special fixture designed to keep the aircraft steady and upright. Throughout the next several weeks, Aircraft Structures International Corp. in Enid, Oklahoma, will carefully rebuild the single-engine turboprop until it looks and operates like new again. ASIC is an FAA-certified repair station specializing in recovering, repairing, modifying and rebuilding Cessna Caravans. Also certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency and Indonesia, the company's technicians travel around the world to recover and repair aircraft damaged from hard landings and hailstorms, vehicle incursions and unfortunate accidents. VIH AEROSPACE
received its first order for the MCP01 Master Caution Panel replacement for the Bell 212 just one month after launching its limited time introductory pricing program. The inaugural customer was TEMSCO Helicopters.
ASPEN AVIONICS received European Aviation Safety Agency approval for installation of its EFD1000H Primary Flight Display into Bell and Bell/Agusta 206 models under EASA STC 10053378. In addition, Aspen announced that its ATX100 ADS-B transceiver will interface with the Garmin GNS 430W/530W series of GPS navigators. Deliveries begin immediately.
GENESYS AEROSYSTEMS said that the U.S. Army's next generation fixed-wing training aircraft will be equipped with the company's glass cockpit. The all-digital cockpit was developed by Genesys Aerosystems for the Grob G 120TP to support advanced military training concepts. The Army will train 600 students per year in six Grob trainers.
CMD FLIGHT SOLUTIONS received FAA approval expanding its ADS-B Out AML STC solution to numerous additional aircraft. According to the company, the focus of this STC amendment was to take full advantage of the WAAS GPS that is integral to Universal Avionics UNS-1(-)W FMS found on hundreds of Biz Jets, Part 25
and Part 23, alike.
FREEFLIGHT SYSTEMS' line of ADS-B systems are now shipping and available for installation. The RANGR Lite systems recently received FAA STC and AML certification.
VECTOR AEROSPACE said it is investing in the addition of a new engine test cell at its Summerside facility in Prince Edward Island, Canada, through a financing partnership with provincial and federal governments. This new multimillion dollar test cell, which will be capable of supporting turboprop engines producing up to 5,000 shaft horsepower, will join three existing test stands at Summerside, two dedicated to turboprops and one to turbofans.
MAXCRAFT AVIONICS received Transport Canada STC SH14-35 for installation of the Garmin GTX 33H Mode-S Transponder with optional GTS 825/855 TAS/TCAS-I Processor and dual directional traffic antennas. According to the company, this STC will be revised to include ADS-B Out functionality at the next opportunity and is currently being reviewed for FAA familiarization.
JET AVIATION ST. LOUIS is now authorized to manufacture and sell individual parts to customers and suppliers under the PMA issued by the FAA. The PMA approval means Jet Aviation St. Louis can manufacture and stock parts that are needed frequently and can sell them to customers who can install the parts themselves. In addition, Jet Aviation St. Louis teamed with SmartSky Networks to install the industry's first airborne 4G LTE-based Internet network on the Global Express platform.
KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY SALINA expanded its unmanned aircraft systems program with new bachelor's degree and minor beginning this fall. Combining UAS technology with coursework in computer science, electronic engineering and mechanical engineering, K-State Salina is offering a Bachelor of Science in engineering technology with an unmanned aircraft systems option. The new course of study complements the already existing aeronautical technology bachelor's degree in UAS, which is centered around piloting and field operations, by concentrating on the design and implementation of unmanned systems. The university also is adding a UAS minor with both a flight operations focus and a data acquisition and management focus.
SPIRIT AERONAUTICS received expanded airframe maintenance ratings from the FAA. In addition, the company was awarded with the NASA Langley Research Center modernization project for the Dassault model HU-25A research aircraft.
GULFSTREAM AEROSPACE CORP. delivered two Gulfstream G450 aircraft to Dallas-based fractional provider Flexjet LLC in a delivery ceremony at Gulfstream's Savannah headquarters. In addition, the company received FAA approval for installation of the next-generation Satcom Direct Router, an enhancement that simplifies cabin communications on Gulfstream G550 and G450 aircraft.
ACSS, a division of L-3 Aviation Products, announced that ATR certified the NXT-600 Mode S Transponder for installation on the ATR 42/72-600 aircraft. The NXT-600 is a small, lightweight transponder ideal for regional and corporate aircraft, including helicopters. The NXT-600 is DO-260B-compliant to meet EASA's and the FAA's NextGen mandates for ADS-B Out capability.
GARMIN announced an updated version of the Garmin Pilot app for Android, which incorporates the display of both terrain and obstacles overtop Garmin's navigation maps, VFR Sectionals, IFR high and low en route charts. In addition, Garmin announced select products now support the display of helicopter route charts throughout the United States, as well as Canadian IFR and VFR sectional charts. The aera 795/796, G3X Touch and Garmin Pilot for iOS now support the display of these charts with the most recent system software installed. Additionally, helicopter route charts are available for these products throughout eight U.S. metropolitan areas, including the Gulf of Mexico, which provide detailed map information tailored to helicopter operators.
STANDARDAERO's DutchAero Services received MLE-145 accreditation from the Netherlands Military Aviation Authorities during a ceremony at the Logistic Centre Woensdrecht on June 22.
PENTASTAR AVIATION will sponsor the 91st running of the Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race, which begins July 18, from Port Huron and concludes at Mackinac Island. In addition, Pentastar Aviation received STCs from the FAA for installation of the Satcom Direct Router for Gulfstream GIV-X (G350/G450) and the Gulfstream GV-SP (G500/G550) aircraft.
PRO STAR AVIATION named CHRISTOPHER MANCINI director of maintenance, where he will manage the day-to-day airframe MRO responsibilities at Pro Star's main facility in Londonderry, New Hampshire. Holding an FAA A&P license, Mancini started his career serving for the U.S. Coast Guard. He has worked as an A&P technician, project manager, manager, as well as sales support at Bombardier Inc.
AERO CHARTER unveiled its new solar panel systems in an effort to be a business that is environmentally conscious. Two new 24.5 kilowatt solar panel systems were installed on both of the Aero Charter hangars.
ELLIOTT AVIATION promoted MARK WILKEN to vice president of avionics programs and operational logistics. In addition, the company announced its FAA STC approval for the activation and use of all GOGO BUSINESS AVIATION Wi-Fi products in the Phenom 300. The STC allows airplane activation for all Wi-Fi standards, including A, B, G and N.
CARPENTER AVIONICS named RICK JANUSZEWSKI to lead the company's sales efforts for installation, repair and maintenance services.
ASTRONICS CORP. announced that Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. company, successfully completed the first flight of the Bell 525 Relentless. Astronics AES is a part of the Bell 525 Relentless team by providing the secondary electrical power distribution system. The power system features Astronics' CorePower Electronic Circuit Breaker Units.
AVIONICA said the FAA issued an STC that grants approval for the installation of the company's satLINK Max Iridium SATCOM System on NextGen Boeing 737-400/-500/-600/-700/-900 and BBJ aircraft. The satLINK MAX is the aviation industry's first air traffic control voice and data qualified Iridium satellite-based communications product, according to the company.
AVIATION SPECIALTIES UNLIMITED recently celebrated 20 years in business and played host to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening for its new expanded base of operations in Boise, Idaho.
COOL CITY AVIONICS announced the development of an interface to the Aspen EFD-1000H flight display. The new interface allows Cool City Avionics' HAP and HFC series, 2- and 3-axis Autopilots, currently being installed in Robinson R-44 and R-66 helicopters, to be connected to the Aspen display.
