Stick with the Color Wheel
This demo is how my goof-proof color wheel works for me... and specifically for a non-abstract painting. In this case, the painting subject that I will
demo is a loose landscape.
The color wheel helps to isolate the 4 colors I plan to use. Place those 4 colors on the table. Note the dominant color, focal point color and the 2 spice colors.
Tone the surface all over with variations of the one dominant color. Next, brush in the focal point color. The focal point could be a farm house and
barn in the distance.
The two spice colors are sparingly brushed next to or near the focal color.
All eyes will naturally go to that area of the painting.
Use a color wheel, any color wheel - and stick with the color combination suggested on the instructions.
So that's it! A quick and simple way to get started, no matter your subject, your style or your studio experience.
