Greetings from
C hez Nous!
The  months of September, October and November have flown by as we welcomed the Class of 2019, enjoyed the Papal Visit, greeted over 400 prospective students at our annual Open House, celebrated student achievements in the classroom and victories on the fields of play, and welcomed a group of educators for a NYSAIS site visit! I hope that you enjoy reading about some of these milestones in our first digital edition of  Chez News . We will be sending more throughout the school year.

As Thanksgiving draws near, I echo the words of St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians: "I give thanks to my God every time I think of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now."

May you and your families have a Happy Thanksgiving and Blessed Advent.

Warm regards,

Dr. Virginia O'Brien, S.U.
NYSAIS Accreditation Process
Last week, The New York Association of Independent Schools,(NYSAIS)   "a voluntary association of 192 independent nursery, elementary and secondary schools enrolling over 80,000 students across the state" sent eight educators to Notre Dame. Their task: determine the strength of Notre Dame's mission and the ways in which that mission manifests itself in the school community. During their time  Chez Nous , the site visit team measured Notre Dame's programs against the requirements of a NYSAIS Member School.  This visit was just one step in the accreditation process. This past spring, Notre Dame received a provisional membership through NYSAIS.
NYSAIS Visiting Team (L to R) Jack Sproule, St. David's School; Shari Honig, Professional Children's School; Joseph Dugan, Cristo Rey Brooklyn; Rev. Kenneth Boller, S.J.,  St. Peter's Prep; Steven Noga, Xavier High School; Pamela Clarke, The Doane Stuart School; Julie Choi, Riverdale Country School; and Sara Beasley, The Spence School.
In the m onths leading up to this site visit, administrators, faculty and staff participated in a self-study process in which every aspect of the Notre Dame program was closely examined. From this reflective practice, a self-study report was created and submitted to the visiting team who had the chance to see the findings of the report first-hand during their visit. Visiting team members participated in classroom observations, met with students, teachers, administrators, staff, members of the board of trustees and parents to hear about Notre Dame from various perspectives.

The visit culminated with brief remarks made by Rev. Kenneth Boller, SJ, President of St. Peter's Prep who chaired the visiting committee. In his remarks, Boller commented that, "It did not take long for the visiting committee to feel the warmth of the community and to understand what
Chez Nous really means." As is NYSAIS policy, Fr. Boller could not share any official results or recommendations. The NYSAIS Executive Board will review the report this January and determine whether Notre Dame will receive accreditation through their organization.

Notre Dame Faculty members Victoria Abad '99 and Anne Crosson, who chaired the Self-Study Steering Committee, worked tirelessly to compile the Self-Study Report. When hailed for their efforts they graciously thanked their colleagues and our amazing students. Thank you to all the parents, students, board members, friends and alumnae who supported Notre Dame during the self-study process. We look forward to sharing the official results of the visit in the early spring!
Open House 2015
In the early afternoon of Sunday, October 25, a line began to form in front of Notre Dame School running east to the corner of 13th Street and 8th Avenue. Four hundred and forty students accompanied by parents, family and friends waited patiently as Mr. Bob Grote, Director of Admissions, flung open the doors and welcomed prospective students from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, New Jersey and beyond to the annual Notre Dame Open House.

Student tour guides led small groups of parents and students through the halls, stopping along the way to hear about the various academic and extra-curricular opportunities offered  Chez Nous. Dozens of Notre Dame Parents welcomed our guests in the ND Commons, answering questions and sharing their insights into what makes Notre Dame such a special place. Many thanks to the over 200 student tour guides and amazing parent volunteers who baked and prepared delicious snacks for over 1,200 guests to Notre Dame.
