Principal's Message
May 27, 2016
Dear Families and Friends of OLQP:

At Our Lady Queen of Peace, the students are learning in creative ways, developing talents and skills for life, and reaching out to those in need.

Each year, the seventh grade class, under the mentorship of Mrs. Sanchez, participates in the Texas Trading Post. This is a cross-curricular project that requires students to learn about economics, entrepreneurial enterprise, marketing, and more. The students work together to develop a concept and take it to market. When the trading post is open, the OLQP family goes shopping. Each year, it is amazing to see the products that the students create. It is like going to a trade show. Visitors walk from shop to shop. The students vie for customers trying to lure shoppers in with temptations of cookies and such. At the end of the day, students and faculty leave with things like original art, decorated walking sticks, lanyards, jewelry, candles, college memorabilia, and other treasures. The seventh graders have a great sense of accomplishment and an understanding of how business works.

When you come to prayer or to join us for Mass at OLQP, you may notice upper level students sitting next to younger students. Middle school teachers work with the upper level student to develop students' skills as mentors. It is such a pleasure to watch as the older students direct the students to be reverent. It is equally gratifying to see the younger students look up to their older "brothers and sisters." Middle school students also participate in Service Club. They help younger students with concept development, reading, and study skills. They also help teachers get papers ready to send home by sorting the papers into student folders. Additionally, they help teachers display art work. They work with teachers in any number of activities.  All of these experiences help develop Christian character and leadership in students.

The mission of OLQP is to "fulfill the educational ministry of the Catholic Church and to provide an all-encompassing
spiritual, academic, cultural, and physical-quality elementary education for the southern Brazoria County area. " Not only are the gifts and talents of students being developed, but students are able to experience how they can use their gifts to make the world a better place.  The students and faculty work together with families to use these gifts and talents to reach out to the world and to each other. The recent Art Gallery included a silent auction. The project sponsor, StuCo (student council), voted to donate the proceeds of the silent auction to Fr. Tin's well drilling project in Vietnam. The seventh graders are donating a portion of their Texas Trading Post to Fr. Tin's project as well. These two efforts will provide over $3,000.0 for water wells for those in need in Vietnam.  These are the most recent examples of the OLQP community being the hands and heart of Christ. "Well done, good and faithful servant(s)." Matthew 25:23

Thank you for being part of the OLQP family and for your continued support.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
Mrs. Marianne Mechura, M.Ed.
