Annie Barrows in Support of Libraries
When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time at the library. I mean a lot. When I was 12, the librarians threw up their hands and hired me to shelve books, since I was there all the time anyway. I can't imagine my life without libraries.

Your Dollars at Work

how your dollars work
to make a great library extraordinary.
The true value of libraries is that they create a community of the curious, of wonderers and learners and daydreamers. That's the kind of community I want to live in.

Donor Spotlight:
Friends of the Berkeley Public Library
The Friends of the Berkeley Public Library was founded in 1954 to support the Library, arguably
the city's best-loved institution. The Friends group is an all-volunteer organization made up of
close to 500 members, and 90 dedicated volunteers who raise money through the sale of
donated books. "We operate two bookstores, one inside the Central Library on the ground floor,
and the other just off Telegraph at 2433 Channing. Our on-line sales have become an
increasingly significant source of income, and we have an eagerly anticipated annual sale open
to the public in June." Over the last ten years the Friends raised $1.3 million to support Library
programming-summer reading programs for children and teens, adult literacy, a wide variety of
special lectures, workshops, and events at Central and all four branches-and contribute to
capital campaigns spearheaded by the Foundation.

Tarea Hall Pittman South Branch
Later this summer the newly named
Tarea Hall Pittman South Branch
will unveil a permanent sign and celebrate its namesake.
Tarea Hall Pittman
(1903-1991), a long-time
South Berkeley
resident and civil-rights activist. Pittman was a key leader who registered African-Americans to vote; led protests to persuade war industries to hire African Americans; pushed to integrate Bay Area communities, desegregate the Oakland Fire Department, and led the NAACP's successful effort to pass the California Fair Employment Practices Law. Her long-running weekly radio program on station KDIA, was an important source of positive news for and about the African-American community. Look for an invitation later this year to events and programs that honor her legacy and the library in South Berkeley.
