Janet D. Robishaw, Ph.D.
The College of Medicine welcomes Janet D. Robishaw, Ph.D., as the new chair of the Department of Biomedical Science. She will begin
in this role in September. An accomplished genomics researcher with decades of sustained federal funding from the National Institutes
of Health (NIH), Dr. Robishaw trained under Nobel Laureate Dr. Alfred G. Gilman and will be the first female department chair in the College of Medicine. Read more here.
Bernardo Reyes, M.D.
The College of Medicine welcomes Bernardo Reyes, M.D. as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Biomedical Science and Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Geriatrics/Palliative Care Rotation.

FAU Surgery and Emergency Medicine Residencies Approved
The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine has received initial accreditation from the national Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for University-sponsored residency programs in general surgery and emergency medicine, in collaboration with its member teaching hospitals in the FAU College of Medicine Graduate Medical Education Consortium.
"Together with our outstanding hospital partners in the GME Consortium we are fulfilling our commitment to ensure that we continue to have a strong physician workforce and an enhanced health care delivery system in this region," said Arthur J. Ross, III, M.D., M.B.A., interim dean and professor for the College of Medicine. "We are proud of our medical school's residency program leadership team and our hospital partners for this landmark accomplishment for our community."

This month, we'd like to turn the spotlight on one of FAU's third-year medical students, Kristine Almonte.
Kristine's father has suffered
from a
myriad of health issues, and Kristine was inspired by the doctors who have helped him and the rest of her family. Recently though, Kristine realized her ability to help others was limited by her own health. She had hoped to donate blood at a drive on campus, but was turned away because of high blood pressure. That moment was a turning point for Kristine, who has gone on to lose 85 pounds this year. She believes the experience will help her relate to her future patients.
I hope my experiences will inspire future patients to maintain healthy lifestyles." She said, "I believe I will be able to better empathize with them in their struggles to make health-conscious decisions, especially when they have stress and demanding schedules." She attributes some of her success to her mentors at FAU, who have supported her both academically and personally through this journey.

On Friday, May 6, first-year medical students gathered to honor
anatomical
donors and their families. This year's
ceremony was
hosted by Dr. Darin Trelka, M.D., Ph.D., and Ms. Sandra Albrecht. Groups of students honored their donors by performing songs, reading poetry, and personal essays. A candle was lit after each presentation and the room embraced a moment of silence for each donor. After, the students and professors gathered in the lobby for lunch and reflection.

Renowned Neuroscientist to Lead FAU's New Brain Institute
Randy D. Blakely, Ph.D., a renowned neuroscientist and leading expert in synaptic pharmacology, neurotransmitter transporters, and neurogenetics, is at the helm of the newly-formed FAU Brain Institute.
As executive director of the university-wide Brain Institute, Dr. Blakely will build on existing neuroscience centers and programs within FAU, enhancing existing resources with the addition of new faculty hires and enlarged financial support. In this new position, Dr. Blakely will also pursue opportunities for research collaboration and educational relationships with regional, national and international partners, including Scripps Florida, Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, Boca Raton Regional Hospital's Marcus Neuroscience Institute, and the FAU Research and Development Authority.

Fulbright Scholar Graduates
Olga Bakina, a Fulbright scholar from the Ukraine, received her M.S.
in biomedical science at FAU's graduation ceremony earlier this month. Bakina worked in the lab of Marc Kantorow, Ph.D., assistant dean for graduate programs.

akina will be pursuing a Ph.D. at Helmholtz Zentrum in Munich, Germany.

Lisa Brennan, Ph.D., Presents Paper at Conference
Congratulations to Lisa Brennan, Ph.D., who presented her paper
entitled "UV-light- and oxidative stress-dependent phosphorylation and translocation of
αB-crystallin to the mitochondria and
nucleus
of lens epithelial cells and its protection of lens organelles" at the 2016 Association for Research in Vision and Opthalmology Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington earlier this month.
Dr. Nouri-Shirazi Selected for Travel Grant
Mahyar Nour
i-Shirazi , D.V.M., Ph.D., has been selected as a recipient of an American Association of Immunologists (AAI) Travel Grant to attend the International Congress of Immunology 2016 (ICI 2016), in August in Melbourne, Australia.
Boca Hoops Thanks College of Medicine Students
Boca Hoops is the youth basketball program for the children of the metropolitan Boca Raton area. Established in 1989 by Co-Founder and College Affiliate Faculty member, Joseph Forstot, Boca Hoops' goal was to bring the game of "round ball" to the youth of Boca Raton; to teach the basics of basketball, while promoting sportsmanship and teamwork. Since its inception, Dr. Forstot wanted to guarantee a successful program, not just playing the game of basketball, but to ensure a healthy environment. Dr. Forstot has recruited volunteer physicians from our Boca Raton medical community to do physicals on the young athletes to make sure they were fit to play. With the help of M3 student Arielle Schultz, they recruited fellow medical students: Coby Grand, Michael McGarry, Andrew O'Neill, Hermann Piard, Steven Freeland, Daniel Daroszewski (past students: Elit ben Simon, Hadad, Gloria Nadayil, David Dillon '15)...to do player physical exams, with community physicians, many who are affiliate CESCOM faculty, to oversee and co sign their work. This has been the 3rd year CESCOM students have undertaken this community medical service. It has been a great community service project, and Dr. Forstot and the board of directors of Boca Hoops thanks them for their volunteering.
HOSA Named Student Organization of the Year
Dan Brown and Peter Troccoli, two of this year's College of Medicine graduates, presented Ira J. Gelb, M.D., with an award for mentoring the Outstanding Club on campus, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), at the Student Organization Awards and Recognition Banquet.

began fundraising for the diaper and food drive for the Delray Department of Health with a March Madness bracket challenge that was open to all medical students and faculty
Fourth-Year Medical Student Presents at Florida Vascular Society Scientific Sessions
Bradley Robinson
received the Next Generation Scholarship
from the Florida Vascular Foundation to attend the Florida Vascular Society 29th Annual Scientific Sessions and present his work "Spinal Cord Ischemia in the Setting of Thoracoabdominal Aneurysm repair: A Comparison of Two Cases," Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World. He worked this presentation with Dr. Reagan Ross and Dr. Miguel Lopez-Viego.
