Celebrate World Oceans Day
Wednesday June 8th is World Oceans Day-  a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future.  Officially designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008, World Oceans Day is an opportunity to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans, and be part of the solutions.

This year, people all over our blue planet are celebrating with the theme "Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet." Organizations and individuals around the world are promoting prevention of plastic ocean pollution with events in their communities, special announcements, and everything in between!

Kids Ocean Day
Date: May 5- June 8
Mike Thompson Wildlife Area, South Spit Humboldt Bay, Loleta, CA

Ocean Day is a state-wide marine debris education program funded the California Coastal Commission, and coordinated locally by Friends of the Dunes and the Bureau of Land Management. About 800 Humboldt County students will receive classroom lessons focusing on the health of coastal and marine environments. During the Ocean Day event in June, these students will gather at the Mike Thompson Wildlife Area on the South Spit of the Humboldt Bay for a day of beach clean-up and invasive plant removal. After all this hard work, students will sit in an aerial art design while a plane flies over to capture the image. This program is completely free for schools, even the buses are paid for. To sign up your class, or to volunteer email [email protected] or call 707-444-1397.

World Oceans Day Campaigns
Wave For Change
This World Oceans Day, join the Wave For Change, a simple campaign that asks participants to record themselves making a commitment to the ocean, doing the wave, and sharing their wave on social media! Each person's wave will be added to a network of other people doing the Wave to help our ocean.

Grow the Wave for Change by following three easy steps and challenging others to participate!
1) Record a short video giving one example of a specific commitment or action
2) "Sign" your commitment by doing the Wave on video! (The "wave" is using your arms to make a wave motion flowing from one arm to the next )
3) Post the video online with the tags #WaveForChange and #WorldOceansDay. Don't forget to tag World Oceans Day on Facebook & Instagram, and @CelebrateOceans on Twitter.

The Wave will grow as we have you and others build on it, on a rolling basis from May 25 th  through World Oceans Day, June 8 th , and throughout National Oceans Month. For more information and resources, click here

Take the Better Bag Challenge
Plastic trash is choking our ocean, and 80% of it comes from land... We can do better!

The challenge:

Promise not take any disposable plastic bags for a whole year. Take a better bag instead!

Follow these easy steps:
  1. Click here to take the Better Bag Challenge, and commit to use reusable bags instead of disposable for a whole year.
  2. Share your commitment on social media with the hashtag #BetterBagChallenge
  3. Feeling motivated? Take the challenge to the next level! Reduce your use of disposable plastics in other areas of your life! For instance, you could:
    • Choose cosmetics and personal care products, like face washes, that are free of microbeads.
    • Take a pass on disposable bottles, utensils, and wrappers
    • Sign up for a clean up!
