A Message from the Dean...
The Age of Uncertainty on Steroids
Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord...spread out his hands to heaven [and] said, "O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath.- 1 Kings 8:22

The decade immediately after World War I has been called by historians the Age of Uncertainty. It was so called because the culture was then at the beginning of challenging the ideas of the Enlightenment. The two major figures of that era were Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud.
We now live in a Postmodern age which, could appropriately be called the Age of Uncertainty on steroids.
Now, everything is up for grabs: what is meant by marriage, who is able to give birth and at what age, and even what it means to be man or woman.
Not all of this questioning is bad. This pushing of the boundaries has opened up so many discoveries, removed invisible but very real barriers, and allowed for relationships and collaboration among people previously thought impossible.
But the dark underbelly of this Age of Uncertainty is the quashing of ideas and beliefs and the stifling of dissenting views because they don't fit in with the so-called majority's views of what is the truth.
One of the victims of this Age of Uncertainty is belief in God. Belief in a personal God is being cast aside as passé, along with such relics as flat earth, the sun revolving around the earth, and the Piltdown Man. God, it is said, is simply a projectio n of our finitude and desire for something bigger than ourselves.
That is too simplistic. If God were simply a projection of us as the highest form of species, we would have imagined a God more like the Greek and Roman gods who were really gods with human characteristics: petty, vindictive, and shallow, just as we humans can be.
The God revealed in the Bible is very non-mortal: eternal where we are limited, immortal where we are certain to die, good where we are fickle, righteous where we are often inconsistent, and is love itself where we are quid pro quo. The God we worship is a God that we would not have imagined without this God revealing himself to us. It is like a two-dimension cartoon character imagining a three-dimension person. It's simply beyond our reach and our imagination.
And we worship this God every Sunday with others. And the amazing thing is, that when we worship him, we actually find ourselves and are raised to a level of humanity that we never thought possible. When we encounter this living God, this God who is love itself, we gain a level of security in faith that is like a man and woman who are secure in their love for each other, and they have no doubt about it.
