HISPANIC CULTURAL FESTIVAL IS SATURDAY
La Fiesta del Pueblo, the largest Hispanic festival in
South
Georgia, comes to Fulwood Park
beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday,
bringing the taste, the sound, the history, the culture and traditions of Latin America to Tifton.
Celebrate a day of fun, authentic foods, Mariachi music and folkloric dances.
Admission to the festival and to most of the
children's activities is free.
Non-stop entertainment includes the featured performers -- Mariachi Espuelas de Am
é
rica -- and Nuestro Folklore Dancers, Grupo de Danzas Cimarr
ó
n, Folkorico de Victor Cuevas, Banda Gran Comisi
ó
n and other local performers. A Street Dance featuring a live band will be from 6-9 p.m.
Typical foods prepared by local vendors will be for sale as well as a variety of arts,

TO MEET IN FORUM OCT. 6
The Tifton-Tift County
Chamber of Commerce is holding a City of Tifton "Meet the Candidates Forum" at 6 p.m. on Oct. 6 in the small auditorium at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.
Candidates seeking election Nov. 3 to Tifton City Council have been invited.
They are:

- Julie Smith, current council member seeking the mayor's position

TIFT COUNTY FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE
CONTRIBUTIONS MADE; BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED
The Tift
County
Foundation for Educational Excellence recently received two contributions from local businesses.
Prince Toyota presented the Foundation with a total of $5,000, which represents matching contributions from the local dealership and Toyota International. Heather Prince Stripling and Heidi Prince Massey made the presentation.
Also, this past week, Georgia Power Co. presented the Foundation with a check for $1,000. Lynn Lovett, Georgia Power's area manager, presented the contribution to Frank Sayles Jr., Foundation president; and Mike Brumby,
Foundation executive director.
The
Foundation
board also elected
two members to fill unexpired terms: Charleston Carter and Dr. Kaylar Howard.

for the 9th annual "Stepping Out for Your Heart" event.
"We will be honoring our local heart champions, as we walk a lap with them in their honor," said Mandy Brooks, TRMC Foundation Executive Director. "It's going to be a fun evening for the entire family. There will be a dunking booth, where you can dunk your favorite physician or nurse. We will also have a bouncy house, slide, musical entertainment from Common Love, blood pressure checks and demonstrations from cardiology vendors."
Brooks said that the foundation has also challenged local cardiologists to a friendly competition. "The cardiologist with the most family and patients present will receive a trophy," she said. "The trophy will have their name engraved on it; as well as bragging rights for one year.
"Each year, the trophy will be up for grabs, so please come and support them. I know they are excited about the challenge, and are looking forward to spending time with you. We hope to see you on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. at the Eighth Street Middle School track."

cancer. Lee Turner of Tifton will be taking
decorated luminaries to Washington, D.C., for the national Lights of Hope cancer ceremony on Sept. 28. Turner says
Tifton and Congressional District 8 probably will be No. 1 in Georgia and in the top 10 in the nation with raising more than $2,800 dollars for cancer research through the sale of luminaries. ... WYLENE & TALMADGE PARR celebrated a real milestone this past week -- their 75th wedding anniversary. The Parrs are residents of Southern Care Assisted Living in Tifton and had a surprise celebration. Mrs. Parr stays active and walks each day; "T" Parr is a former boxer in the U.S. Navy.

TIFT COUNTY'S WALK & FAMILY FUN EVENT IS
OCT. 3
The annual
Cancer Stomp: Tift County Walk & Family Fun event is
9 a.m.-noon on
Saturday, Oct. 3 at the
YMCA soccer field.
The
Cancer Stomp is a fundraising campaign of the
Cancer Coalition of South Georgia. Folks can participate individually or as a member of a team, raising money through different activities.
The community fundraising wraps up with a one-mail reflective walk followed by family fun activities to celebrate the fundraising success, honor cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease. The family activities include relay races, aerobics, hula hoops, Frisbee throwing, face painting and more.
One hundred percent
of all funds that are raised stay in
South Georgia
. The Cancer Coalition raises funds for service, education, research and outreach initiatives throughout its 32-county area. That is why the organization encourages businesses, schools, civic groups, religious groups and families to form teams.
"We want to let people know that there is a local organization fighting cancer right here in our communities," said Coalition Communications Coordinator Ruthie Garner. "With the Cancer Coalition, we assure you that 100 percent of your support will stay in South Georgia to help local people."
"Last year's Stomp raised $4,700, and we are grateful to the local businesses that have already joined the event this year as sponsors," said Coalition Development Coordinator Doris Pierce-Hardy.
She said sponsorships are still needed, along with teams, to raise funds and participate in the walk and celebration.

PEANUT TOUR FOCUSES ON PRODUCTION

 The top peanut-producing state in the country showcased its 2015 crop during the annual
Georgia Peanut Tour last week.
The
University of Georgia, along with the
Georgia Peanut Commission, coordinated the three-day tour, which allowed participants to visit
Southwest Georgia, home of some of the top peanut producers in the state. The tour, which included farmers, industry personnel and visitors from other countries, educated participants about all aspects of peanut production.
"The tour has been excellent. We got to visit a number of sites that showcased Georgia's peanut production," said Rajagopalbabu "Babu" Srinivasan, UGA entomologist and chairman of the peanut tour committee. "We got to see farming operations on a big scale, digging and picking."
Srinivasan and fellow UGA team members, including plant pathologists, agronomists, entomologists and economists, provided insight as to why peanut production is a complex but rewarding process.
The tour included visits to multiple farming operations in Decatur, Grady, Miller and Seminole counties.
Srinivasan said Georgia is expected to grow almost 800,000 acres of peanuts this year. Such an increase was attributed to the poor commodity prices for corn and cotton. While peanut prices are not ideal, they do present better opportunities for profit, which is why achieving high yields is so important for farmers.
"We grow a lot of peanuts, and we grow the world's finest peanuts. This is the peanut capital of the world," Srinivasan said. "There's no other place that could top this."
