Reconnecting Nebraska's Farmers and Grocery Retailers

Sponsored by your Nebraska Grocery Industry Association

Message from Kathy Siefken, Nebraska Grocery Industry Association
Let me take a quick moment to thank everyone who turned out for our final annual event, the Hackers & Snackers Golf Extravaganza last week. We had a great time, and the weather was perfect for golfing.
Our next event will be held in January 2015. Be sure to mark your calendar to attend the Annual Conference and the Legislative Reception and Dinner on Jan. 22 at Lincoln's Cornhusker Marriott. The Annual Conference will feature nationally known speakers who will address topics of interest to all businesses. The Legislative Reception and Dinner begin at 5 p.m. and will once again feature former members of UNL Volleyball and Football. Photo and autograph opportunities will be available throughout the evening! In addition, Nebraska state senators will be invited to attend, so this is a great way to get to know your representatives and visit with them about issues that are important to you. We will also hold the silent auction, of which all proceeds will go toward scholarships.  It should be a great event and we encourage you to attend!

Sincerely,

Kathy Siefken
Executive Director

Proudly sponsored by Nebraska's corn farmers
The Nebraska Corn Board, on behalf of 23,000 corn farmers in Nebraska, invests in market development, research, promotion and education of corn and value-added products. The board aims to work closely with the farmer-to-consumer food chain, to educate everyone about the role corn has in our everyday healthy lives. The Nebraska Corn Board is proud to sponsor the Farmer Goes to Market program to help bring its mission of expanding demand and value of Nebraska corn to the consumer, through the strongest touch point in that chain: the Nebraska retail grocer.

We take great pride in supporting Nebraska's agricultural foundation
The farm and ranch families represented by Nebraska Farm Bureau are proud sponsors of the Farmer Goes to Market program. We take great pride in supporting Nebraska's agricultural foundation. A key part of that effort is to make sure we produce safe and affordable food. This newsletter is an important part of our effort to connect the two most important parts of the food chain -- the farmer and the grocer -- with the goal of increasing consumer awareness and information about how their food is raised in Nebraska.

An educational program produced by Food-Chain Communications and delivered to members of the Nebraska Grocery Industry Association. Farmer Goes to Market was established in 2008 to help bridge the growing gulf between today's grocery retailer and today's farmer, empowering them with full-chain knowledge to carry agriculture's true message to food consumers.

Translating Food Technology: A new 'Why do Farmers do That?' looks at cow cruelty

Why 'torture' cows for not standing up?

Another "undercover" farm video shot by a political animal-rights group has hit the Internet and news media. The video once again not only will lead your shoppers to have questions about why farmers do what they do, but it also illustrates the reality that what they see in those sensationalized videos is not always as it seems. Case in point: Why are the dairy workers in this video "forcing" sick cows to stand up, as the video claims? Why would any humane farmer do that? The answer may surprise you.

Foresight on Food Politics:
The troubles with soda taxes
Hunger data by state and county Taxes on high-calorie soft drinks, like the one killed in the Nebraska legislature earlier this year, can work, proclaims the Huffington Post. We just need to tinker a little more with how they're calculated. Not so fast, argues this Oklahoma ag economist. There are a whole lot of good reasons to question their underlying assumptions, he says.

Competitive Commodity Insight:
Where are milk prices headed now?

Where are milk prices headed?

Nationwide average retail milk prices this spring reached their highest point in the last half decade, and futures prices early this month jumped into record territory. These price increases occurred even as dairy farmers increased supply. What gives with the milk situation? And what's ahead? Take a look at our latest dairy price outlook by clicking here.

Navigating the New Food Movement:

How much are 'willingness to pay' estimates really worth?

Will consumers follow through on what research promises?

As Farmer Goes to Market has cautioned before, much of the mainstream media, including the traditional grocery retail trade press, often rely on "willingness to pay" research to urge grocery retailers to stock organic, natural, sustainable and other labels. Yet they often miss the one important, obvious question: How well does that kind of research predict whether the average shopper will actually follow through on that promise? A new study throws more surprising light on the controversial topic.

Meet your Farmers...
Combining technology with traditional farming to guard the environment

Bacon Hill Farms, near Dodge Fifth-generation family famers Danny and Josie Kluthe combine traditional pork production with cutting-edge technology to improve Bacon Hill's environmental stewardship. Watch how the Dodge farm uses a manure digester to supplement their farm vehicles with natural gas and generate electricity for the farm and their home.

Summer has come and gone, and not a minute too soon

Summer has come and gone, fortunately

The end of the summer grows near, and apparently just in time to save these people from all out disaster.
