January 2016
Dear Friends of Shoals Marine Laboratory,

Happy 50th Anniversary to the wonderful SML Community!! 1966 -2016! With your support, SML has made amazing progress over the last 50 years on our beautiful rocky Appledore Island home! From the students of the 1970's literally shingling the roof of their dorms after morning biology lessons, to 2015's engineering interns flipping the switch on a state-of-the art 'Green Grid' to power the entire lab, SML has become one of the country's preeminent and largest marine laboratory focused on undergraduate education. While undergraduate education is our pride and focus, SML offers much more. SML provides unique public education programs, stewards our historic cultural resources, collaborates in Gulf of Maine wide scientific research, and upholds several long-term biological monitoring programs.

The changes in the Gulf of Maine over the last 50 years and those expected in the future makes me grateful for all the work SML has been conducting over, and clearly outlines the need to continue into the next 50. Our mission and your support have never been more important. The Gulf of Maine's waters are warming faster that 99% of the world's oceans, the shrimp and cod fisheries are closed, southern Black Sea Bass are swimming north, storms are expected to intensify, and these are just a few examples of coming changes. How these changes will impact the marine resources upon which we rely is unfolding now and into the future. SML's long-term monitoring programs are critical to documenting and understanding the implications of these changes. Equally important are SML's excellent education programs that will help prepare the next generation of scientists and citizens for addressing the changes ahead.

A wide array of wonderful and dedicated supporters have enabled SML to achieve our mission over the past 50 years. We hope you will join with us to celebrate our Golden Anniversary and to  meet the challenges of the next 50 years!

SML Website has a New Look!
In celebration  of our Golden Anniversary, we have created a new website . We hope you find the new site fun and full of useful information! Our new website address is easy to remember:

SML Celebrates 50 Years
We have planned many activities to celebrate our 50th year! We have put a list of all the events on our website. We hope  you  can join us and help us spread the word! There is something for everyone from seals to photography, day trips to overnights, all lead by a great variety of experts and seasoned Shoalers.

Register Now: Two Special Events in August
Among all the fabulous events celebrating our 50th year are two very special events in August: Shoals Scientists Speak and Celebrate 50 Weekend. Please reserve your seat today as both these events have limited capacity.
Shoals Scientists Speak
Please join us at the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, NH for Shoals Scientists Speak. We have invited SML alumni that span our first 50 years to talk about the next 50 years in ocean stewardship. The presenters will range from a high school student who has started a ocean protecting non-profit to the director of a marine laboratory in the Gulf of Mexico. These talks will leave us all feeling inspired about the mission of SML!
Celebrate 50 Weekend!
Calling all Shoalers! New and old! Please join us for a daytrip or an overnight on our beloved Appledore Island. We have lots of boats running to meet your needs. Come back to your island home and explore those rocky tide pools with your family! Space is limited. We encourage local Shoalers to offer overnight accommodations to their fellow Shoalers on the mainland - make a fun social weekend of celebrating 50 years of SML! See you there!

In closing
Eve ry other breath you take - right now, as you read this - comes from the ocean! The water you drink, ultimately comes from the ocean. We all have a stake in the health of the ocean. As one of my heroes Sylvia Earle once said, "The most valuable thing we extract from the oceans is our existence." We are proud of all that SML has to offer in the promotion of ocean health: research, education, and taking action! We do not do this alone. We rely on our community from Ph.D. faculty who mentor and teach our students, to donors whose support keeps our boats and island facilities running smoothly! Please join us for another 50 years!

With deep appreciation and warm wishes,

Jennifer Seavey, Ph.D.
Kingsbury Director of the Shoals Marine Laboratory
