PRB Update, Upcoming Conferences, Wild & Scenic Film Festival

March Madness has set in - it's water conference time in the Northeast and field projects are spinning up.  Following is a review on PRB pilot projects and our recent presentation to Greenland students on a career in land protection and watershed planning.

Permeable Reactive Barrier update

Permeable reactive barriers or PRBs passively treat nitrate in groundwater by providing a suitable environment for anaerobic bacteria that then

convert nitrate to nitrogen gas. Nitrate treatment PRBs are being piloted on Cape Cod and in the Great Bay Watershed.  Truslow RC, along with Haley & Aldrich and Lombardo Associates, is assisting Rockingham and Strafford County Conservation Districts with a pilot study of PRBs in Brentwood and Durham.

The Brentwood PRB is installed and treating a nitrate plume flowing from a community septic field.  The Durham PRB has been permitted and will test PRB use adjacent to a domestic leachfield.  TruslowRC through its involvement in joint venture WaterVision LLC is also completing hydrogeologic investigations in five Cape Cod communities to determine if these areas are good candidate sites for nitrate PRB technology.  A presentation on the Great Bay PRBs will be provided at the New Hampshire Watershed Conference on March 18, 2016 and we look forward to seeing some of you at the conference.
