BCThe past week has placed us face-to-face with the progress of Planned Parenthood's regional abortion facility on Claiborne Avenue in New Orleans. My heart sinks to think of the 2,844 babies a year that, if Planned Parenthood has its way, will never enjoy the beauty of New Orleans.

To be clear, Planned Parenthood still does not have a license to perform abortions in Louisiana.  The organization is fighting Louisiana to get one, trying to prove that there is an unmet need for more abortions. It all comes back to Planned Parenthood's desire to sell more abortions and make more money.

Please join us in prayer, and if you are in the area, join us to stand for life.

Work Moving Forward; Read The Advocate's Story

For more than seven months, the Planned Parenthood construction site on Claiborne Avenue in New Orleans sat dormant. But last week worked on the site resumed, and concrete was scheduled to be poured this week.

Planned Parenthood intends to perform up to 2,844 abortions a year at the facility.

Area residents and church leaders have gathered at the site to pray since work began. Please keep praying and visiting the construction site this week to be a witness to life!

You are free to visit the site on your own, but there will be the following gatherings at the site on these times this week. These are not organized rallies, but people will be there to pray at these times. Please join as you can.

40 Days for Life
Weather Closes Abortion Facility; Prayer Continues

Snow forced the closure of the Bossier City abortion facility last week, but the weather didn't hinder the work of the men and women participating in this spring's Shreveport-Bossier 40 Days for Life campaign. They continued showing up each day to pray for an end to abortion during the winter storm.

The campaign began Feb. 18 and continues through March 29 outside the Bossier City abortion facility at 1505 Doctors Drive.

The midpoint rally will be held at the facility Saturday at 10 a.m. The closing candlelight vigil is Sunday, March 29. A time will be announced later.

* One of National Right to Life's highest priorities is half-way home in Oklahoma. The Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act, HB 1721, passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives last week 84-2. Several House members who commonly vote against pro-life bills abstained rather than publicly oppose the bill prohibiting such a grisly, barbaric method of killing a child in the womb. The bill now moves to the Oklahoma Senate.

The Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act has also passed the Kansas Senate (31-9). A similar bill has been introduced in Missouri.

* Members of the U.S. Senate recently introduced legislation to completely ban taxpayer funding of abortions. Interestingly, not one Democrat signed on to the legislation, even though at least a couple of Senate Democrats claim to be "pro-life."

The numbers, while shocking, bring reality to the warnings from pro-lifers: suicides skyrocketed 44% over the previous year. Physician assisted suicide has become the new "normal" in Oregon.

* Mississippi is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to let it enforce an abortion law that was declared unconstitutional by a lower court.

In papers filed last week, state Attorney General Jim Hood asked the nation's highest court to overturn a ruling handed down last year by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Republican Gov. Babies With Down Syndrome Deserve Life, Too!
La. Law Aimed at Curbing Trend to Abort

By Ryan Verret, Center for Medical Ethics Director

Recently in Armenia, in the moments following her son's birth, baby Leo's mother saw only sad faces and heard a dread-like verdict from the doctor that Leo had Down syndrome. Told by the hospital she had to decide whether or not to keep her son, she decided she could not care for a child with Down syndrome. Leo's father, Samuel, was then faced with a peculiar decision: choose between his wife and new baby. Upon learning the news, Samuel was a bit shocked at first, but on seeing Leo, he proclaimed with joy, 'He's beautiful, he's perfect and I'm absolutely keeping him.'" Samuel's wife filed for divorce, while Samuel is raising Leo by himself.

Certainly, a diagnosis of disability can elicit traumatic feelings within families, especially when the "news" is delivered with a dose of horror and without information about how to handle the decision.

Last spring, State Rep. Joe Harrison (R-Gray) authored a bill requiring more robust information and resources to be offered to parents of children either diagnosed in utero or born with Down syndrome. Prior to this bill, the information provided to parents on the diagnosis was mixed and could include a subtle (or not so subtle) recommendation to abortion or abandonment. Numerous studies observe that the vast majority of mothers who receive a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome choose abortion for reasons based on fear and a lack of knowledge about support.

Rep. Harrison's HB 1058, now Louisiana law, hopes to soften the blow of a diagnosis that, for some, can be shocking.

Louisiana Right to Life was criticized during the legislative process by national pro-abortion organizations for using disability rights groups to promote "anti-choice" measures. But our efforts with Rep. Harrison's bill helped highlight the discriminatory nature of the medical profession's misguided role in promoting abortion as an option for dealing with children with limitations. The reality is that, upon hearing that their child will be "handicapped" with Down syndrome, nearly 9 out of 10 mothers choose to end their child's life.

This statistic reveals a quietly approved form of eugenics when it comes to babies faced with a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome. A recent comment by Oxford biologist Richard Dawkins made in a response to a young woman who was wondering how to act upon discovering that her child would be born with Down syndrome highlights this evil. He said, "Abort it and try again. It would be immoral to bring it into the world if you have the choice."

Statements like this from "respectable" people like Dawkins send a sad message to parents and families all across our state and country. And when the media reports on the sharp decline in Down syndrome births throughout the United States, obviously exacerbated by the aggressive abortion rate, people become accustomed to the notion that Down syndrome babies should not be born.

And yet, stories and experiences of people with disabilities and of those who care daily and often times unconditionally for them offer a different view. In fact, three recent studies conducted by Boston's Children's Hospital surveyed 2,044 parents and guardians of children with Down syndrome. One report included the following results:

  • 79% of parents and guardians reported that their outlook on life was "more positive," specifically because of their child with Down syndrome;
  • 97% of siblings of children with Down syndrome expressed pride for their brother or sister and also confessed that they were a better person because of their sibling.

Another study, focused on the feelings of adults with Down syndrome, found that 99 percent of those surveyed said they were happy with their lives. Such results give proof to the inspiring quote: "Life is the right of every child. Not a special privilege for the fortunate, the planned, and the perfect!"

In recent history our nation has witnessed a dramatic shift in societal attitudes toward individuals with disabilities that are born. In 1990, the Americans With Disabilities Act was passed. In this federal law, the U.S. Congress made the following finding: "Physical or mental disabilities in no way diminish a person's right to fully participate in all aspects of society, yet many people with physical or mental disabilities have been precluded from doing so because of discrimination."

The law begs the question, if people with mental and physical disabilities have the right to "fully participate in all aspects of society," then shouldn't children prenatally diagnosed with a disability or a genetic variation have the right to be born without the medical profession promoting a discriminatory solution of abortion? Such common sense, however, does not reach the minds of the many people who choose abortion to deal with the "biologically imperfect."

Harrison's law provides a strong push to ensure that information offered to Louisiana parents of children with Down syndrome will offer them life-affirming stability in a time of shock, thereby showing them that abortion is not the answer. Still, there is much more work to be done. By educating our community on the beauty of children with Down syndrome, and the resources that exist to support their families, we can reverse a trend that is proving deadly for so many of our Louisiana special children.

Louisiana Camp Joshua Hosting
Four Camps This Spring

First Camp Next Week is Almost Full
One of the major ways students around the state can get more involved in the pro-life movement is by attending one of our pro-life camps this spring. Camp Joshua is an amazing opportunity for Louisiana Right to Life to invest in students who want to learn how to dialog with their peers about abortion.

The program is growing each year. Last year there were three camps; this year there are four.

The dates are:

* Baton Rouge, March 13-15 (Click to register

* Baton Rouge, April 10-12 (Click to register

* Covington, May 1-3 (Click to register

* Shreveport, May 15-17 (Click to register)

At the camp students will learn how to move conversation with their friends from a debate to a dialog and answer all of the objections the pro-abortion movement brings against the pro-life message. Students will hear from great leaders from around the state on topics such as Pro-Life 101, Pro-Life Persuasion: From Debate to Dialog, Medical Ethics, The Impact of Abortion on Women, Life and Law and much more. Students may also be able to meet with lawmakers and discuss the legality of abortion and witness a live ultrasound. What students learn at Camp Joshua will last for the rest of their lives and will empower them to be the generation that sees an end to abortion in our country.

Although we have a great time this is not just a fun camp, this is a camp for leaders who are serious about changing the mindset about abortion in their schools and community.

We have moved our North Louisiana Camp Joshua to the Shreveport area and are very excited about the opportunity this brings. With the largest abortion facility in Louisiana being in Shreveport, we are going to teach student leaders who attend Camp Joshua to raise up the pro-life movement in North Louisiana and save lives.

Many students who have been to Camp Joshua in recent years are now the officers of our college pro-life groups. The opportunities for our youth to get involved are endless, but they all start at Camp Joshua. We are gearing up for some amazing weekends and expecting those who attend to bring great change back to their schools.

Registration is open, and spots are filling quickly! Register online at CampJoshuaLA.org or download a registration form and mail it to Camp Joshua, c/o Louisiana Right to Life, 7121 Catina St., New Orleans, LA 70124.
