Visiting Technion Students

As a part of an ongoing relationship with Technion, Israel's leading medical institution, two fifth-year medical students from the University spent a week visiting the College this month. Affiliate faculty, Dr. Larry Halperin, hosted the students, who attended lectures and research events as well as tours of local private practices and the University's simulation center.

Technion and the College are continuing to build relationships to benefit both medical students and researchers at the two institutions. Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers, as well as chances to enhance students' medical education with inter-cultural experiences continue to grow.

Student Service Work Honored

Second-year students participated in service learning projects with local non-profit organizations last summer. On Jan. 29, they gave presentations describing their months of service and innovative developments at these institutions. "Our students are making us proud with their involvement and contribution to our surrounding communities," said Dr. Peter Averkiou, who directs the service learning projects, "These organizations just love the FAU medical students." Click here  for a list of the students and the organizations with which they volunteered.
Research and Scholarship Day

Medical students and residents of the College showcased their research at the Medical Student and Resident Research and Scholarship day on Feb. 12 in the Gelb auditorium and College Lobby.

M1-M4 students participated in the event, presenting 66 abstracts of research and clinical vignettes in a poster symposium. Six
individuals were selected to deliver oral presentations.
Students were given 10 minutes to present their work to two faculty judges, who were then responsible for selecting 3 winners from the clinical vignette poster category and 3 winners from the research poster category. The six oral presentations lasted 10 minutes each, and the judges chose one winner from each of the two categories. Click here for the list of winners, and photos from the event.

Dr. Caceres modeled the event after the American College of Physicians Conference. The annual event has grown rapidly and encouraged students to build the skills they need to share their research at larger events in the future. Not only are more students submitting abstracts in hopes of participating in the Medical Student and Research and Scholarship Day at FAU each year, but more have gone on to submit their work to national conferences as well.

More than 300 guests attended the College's ball and raised $300,000 to provide student scholarships. See more photos here.

Women in Medicine

Anya Goldstein and Lawrence Brickman, M.D. collaborated with researchers at Florida International University to conduct an analysis of the number of women obtaining graduate degrees in the health sciences. They found that while the number of women pursuing degrees in medicine has been falling since 2003, the number of women obtaining graduate degrees in alternative health disciplines such as nursing or physical therapy has plateaued. The results were presented in February at the Women in Surgery Conference in Orlando.
