We have so many things to celebrate! The students of OLQP are busy learning, competing, and sharing as we enter this holy, penitential season of Lent. Our doors were open wide to welcome visitors to Catholic Schools Week Open House. Student work and projects filled the halls. The children were so excited to show their accomplishments to their parents.
Lent began with morning prayer and the distribution of ashes. Students were encouraged to make Lenten sacrifices by giving up something and/or doing something positive. Students have the opportunity to fill the "water jugs." The Sixth Grade Peace Class is heading up this project to help fund the drilling of a water well for Fr. Tin's outreach in Vietnam. They decorated and distributed empty gallon water jugs so the students can be reminded that their change can become water for people who are less fortunate.
One hundred-one science fair projects were entered in the OLQP Science Fair. Another science program accolade goes to the OLQP First Lego League Robotics team. The team continues in the Bayou City Classic FLL Tournament of Champions competition in Stafford this weekend. When you see Dr. Whitmarsh, be sure to congratulate her. In addition to teaching 6-8th grade Science, serving as a homeroom teacher, coordinating OLQP Science Fair and more, she has earned a scholarship to participate in the "DOW AACT Chemistry Summit" sponsored by Dow and the American Association of Chemistry Teachers. Dr. Whitmarsh will be developing dynamic lessons to share with students and teachers. Dr. Whitmarsh will attend the Summit in Austin this summer. Everyone will benefit!
During Catholic Schools Week, students competed in the OLQP Religion Bowl. Students formed multi-grade level teams to answer questions about our Catholic Faith. Students have also competed in the OLQP Spelling Bee, the Brazoria County Spelling Bee, and the National Geographic Bee. Additionally, Junior High scholars were inducted into the National Jr. Honor Society during the traditional tapping ceremony. Inductees' parents were on hand to pin students while underclassmen were inspired by hearing the new members' profiles and accomplishments.
Behind the scenes, the dedicated staff of OLQP works together to prep, coordinate, sponsor, encourage, and congratulate students who are given the opportunity to shine in class, in school competitions, and beyond. I am grateful to work with such a dynamic group of educators.
I am thankful to all of our OLQP parents for sharing your most precious gifts with us as we work together to help students become the persons "God created them to be."
I invite parents to join me for fellowship on March 2nd for the Principal's Breakfast from 8:30am-9:30am in the foyer of the gym or the Principal's Social from 5:00pm-6:00pm in the conference room.
Thank you for being a part of the OLQP family,
God bless,
Mrs. Marianne Mechura, M.Ed.
